How much surveillance is justifiable in the interest of preventing crime and terrorism?

In this day and age, there seems to be a lack of privacy. People are pulling out their phones recording everything even against people's consent in many cases. There are very few places left where there's 0 surveillance. How much is too much? Should we put laws in place to prevent people from recording others whenever they want?

But maybe the more pertinent question is there anyway we can escape the surveillance? Go into work and there's like 3 cameras in every hallway. Walk outside your house, and you're probably on myriad neighbour's ring cameras. Same applies when you go for a walk down your street. Use the self service checkouts and they stick a camera right on your face.

To what end can we escape all this and still engage with society? Everything we do is tracked and traced. There is no escape old boy, there is no escape. Even if I go and live in the country, which I probably can't afford to do, I still gotta pay my bills. There seems to be a sense of powerlessness. Colleagues seem to love the convenience of it. Having Alexa listening in. A little mic in your private space, hearing everything you do. A ring doorbell because apparently you always need to be connected to your front door. Is this really technology that is enriching our lives and making us happy? If I have a 5g tower outside my house (and they're literally building them less than a metre away from peoples' houses, without any say on the matter), is that making my life better that I might get a video slightly quicker on tiktok?

It doesn't seem we're engaging our thinking faculties here.

There seems to be a loss of hope. How can we stop the tide.

Even in homes, expect to be surveilled. If the government (s) think you're a threat, they will monitor you with cameras with or without a warrant. Certain laws apply, of course depending on local, state or federal guidelines, but it still happens. Anything you look up is tracked, every website you visit has cookies, your bank account, phone records, etc are all documented. Some of it just has to do with possible court cases, while others are in the name of national security. But really, what does the average person do with a hunting rifle, but hunt? If a college student looks up questionable things for a research paper or thesis, is it really worth tanking or delaying all the work they put into their degree? We have way too much.

I’m kind of laissez-faire when it comes to crime. Life is chaos, and it’s futile (and probably incorrect) to try to establish order. Organized society is a folly of the human experiment. We obsess too much and feel too entitled to dictating and controlling outcomes in our life. I think we just are supposed to let go of the wheel. It’s scary, it’s probably not what we WANT, but I think humans would do real well to start realizing that we can’t navigate life based on what we want.

So basically I don’t give a fuck and I’m ready to defend myself in a free-for-all, lmfao. I’m not a big fan of third-party interference like law enforcement. I just don’t think that’s how life is supposed to go, the comfort it provides is irrelevant. We have no entitlement to that comfort or safety. Humans aren’t the point of the story of life, so I can’t really view life through the lens of “well what what would benefit the humans and satisfy them?”

I have to keep a different perspective within the forced reality of what life has been incorrectly made to be beyond my control, but I’ll never view this forced situation as correct or do things with the ultimate end game of preserving it in mind. So cameras are part of policing, and I’m not looking to be policed, period, whether that’s to my benefit or to my detriment.

If you are not guilty does having CCTV in streets and shopping centres really bother anyone, it only ever seems to be those with something to hide complain. London is I think the only city outside of China to be in top ten of must surveillance cities in the world, no one really gives a toss about it really.

I somewhat agree with you. But I've never committed a crime in my life, and I still don't like surveillance on me and whoever I'm with 24/7. Especially when it comes to intimacy with a partner.

I drive walk and run around various UK cities over the years, you just do not think of them, however they do help catch and put away bad people. For that it’s enough, now those that walk around with their mobiles out videoing, different matter lol

I don't need your consent to film you if you're in public. That's why news crews can report from the street without stopping and getting waivers from everyone walking by. I have no issue with that. I have far more issue with the collecting of sales data/browsing data etc and retention of that by the government. It's none of your business what I put on my credit card or what magazines I subscribe to. You go in stores all the time. Those stores are recording you, too. If you don't want to ever be recorded you'd have to live in an off-grid cabin and be fully self-sufficient.

Nothing outside the confines and limits of the Constitution and Bill of Rights should ever be permissible or justifiable. Unfortunately, the government is already so far outside the confines of the constitution and bill of rights that most people in government have committed high treason against the Constitution and the people!

There’s no reason to have a nation or even be alive if people can’t actually live and be free! What the hell are we fighting for if we become as tyrannical as any terrorist?

Hmmm…that’s a tough question. I’d say that mass surveillance technology is a no. Unauthorized access to a person’s devices (cameras, microphones) is a no. I think the real issue is who governments target with this, and how little transparency there is.

Enough where we don't sacrifice freedom for security.. Where fear isn't the dictator.. Maybe some general areas and public spaces to help catch any crimes that happen, but not more than that.. I think even the TSA is an overreaction..
