There are the two largest rich cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. And a number of medium-sized cities which thrive somewhat by being in mining or oil/gas exploration areas. All of Russia‘s rural areas are poor. We are talking about woodshacks with outhouses. It would not have to be that way, if Russia would choose its natural resources income for other things than corruption palaces and the military.

Russia's economy has been helped by rising energy costs and the fact that since the US has greatly reduced their energy production over the last 3 years giving up it's energy independence and energy exporter status, a lot of the countries that the US used to sell oil to are now buying it from Russia.

İ am a Turkish who studied at a university in Russia. I stayed in Yekaterinburg and visited Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Kazan. Not all Russians are rich but they're certainly not poor either. İ have come across poor people but they exist in every country.

By the way i returned to my country after graduation, so I do not know the current Russian economy, but when I was there I was surprised to see that people were not actually as poor as I had thought.

It used to be quite wealthy as a country, I believe, even though many people were poor. Now I think that the country as a whole is no longer wealthy.

From 4 sources, from people that's been there, it doesn't look all that bad. I have to keep in mind that I have been subject to years of American propaganda and derive what I do know from others. From what I've seen... it reminds me of America and where it was in the 80's.

Like yeah, there is a seedy underside that can be found, but if I look around here in America we have that in spades too. If I wanted to see poor... I can think of many different places I'd look at first.

@midnightmoon05 I know, and that scares me. This is the place where I can run into someone parroting the likes of Rachial Maddow, but when I ask why they hate the orange man... silence. I like orange man and I can come up with more reasons why I wouldn't like him. That's just one example.

I believe the media here has almost perfected their art of working people up into enough fervor to start riots. The problem I see with that... is they'll get a riot started over bullshit. They convince people of bullshit. I don't blame the people in general... they have jobs and I have a good hunch I'm probably the only one on this site that's downloaded a certain president's son's entire Apple usage giving me access to his tablet and phone and yes, they wash money through Ukraine and get paid. Normal people don't have time for that much work.

Brings me back to a book report I did when I was in the fourth grade. I told them that Vikings didn't have horns or wings on their helmets. I was sneered at, made fun of, and even the teacher told me I was retarded. They have been taught to believe a thing, and even though that thing is completely false... nobody will believe me because they simply don't want to. I believe propaganda works in much the same way. They will go on thinking Vikings had horns or wings on their helmets just because romantic writers had people doing that in opera plays. Watch any history documentary on the Vikings and you won't see any horns or wings... wonder why that is.

The country has many valuable rescources, but the average russian is rather poor. Its like many countries, a handfull of people is rich as fuck while the majority struggles to afford rent and food.
