What US state are people moving out of the most?

I don’t actually believe it’s California. It’s not really that liberal in reality it’s really libertarian compared to a state like Massachusetts. I really enjoy California and I’m no liberal by any means.

There are a lot of ways to measure it.

In absolute numbers, it's California by far. That was true when I lived there from the late 80s until the early 2000s also. Rumor had it that truck rental companies like U-Haul quit allowing trucks to leave the state, because they couldn't keep enough for local moves.

As a net change in population, it's probably Alaska or Illinois.

As a percentage of people leaving vs arriving, it's New Jersey.

The states people are moving TO are Texas and Florida.

A note about California. From what I observed, most people leaving were not originally from California. They moved there from other states and realized the state is not so golden after all, then turn around and left. I rarely saw native Californians move.

You realize that California lost between 790,442 to 844,896 previous residents in 2022 alone right? While there net migration isn't that stark, it's still a devastating amount of population migration away from the state. 790,442 to 844,896 people that use to live in California in 2021 packed their bags and said fuck this shit I'm out of here. California by far lost the most previous residents in 2022 according to the U. S. Census Bureau, 2022 American Community Survey. They were able to buffer their net losses with importation of large amounts of foreigners. Between 280,960 to 315,342 people from foreign countries moved to California in 2022 thus making California not look as bad as it really is.

Massachusetts in comparison lost 203,332 to 225,956 previous residents from 2021 and imported between 66,246 to 81,242 foreigners.

In contrast Florida was the biggest winner. Between 711,429 to 766,507 people from all over America moved to Florida. An additional 235,642 to 269,198 people from foreign countries moved to Florida in 2022.

Texas experienced similar new move in residents to Florida with 645,440 to 691,236 Americans from other states moving to the lone star state. An additional 218,250 to 249,252 people from other countries also arrived.

For a state like California that has twice the population of a state like Florida to have only 2/3 the number of Americans moving into the state as Florida does, shows that American sentiment toward California and it's anti-American policies they represent are largely disliked by the American public. California only has 1/3 of the American population migration you'd expect it to have if they were on an even footing with a state like Florida. Thus California is a state in decline that largely appeals to foreigners rather than Americans.

Somehow, as a non-American, I'd just guess California or I'd guess somewhere like too small for enough jobs like some small states, and other places for too crowded and it's not New York City lol. So hmm, that's a tough one. I could point you in the right direction by the above in that, there's two scenarios at play for two different reasons for moves, either too small for enough to go around or too crowded and also not enough to go around lol 😂😆 too big or too small

For whatever reason, the only states that came to my mind randomly, for no reason, Texas, Wyoming and Arkansas (ar-kansas, imagine if people really said it like ar-kansas) lol 😂😆

New York has the second largest population exodus after California. In fact, North Carolina had more Americans moving in from other states than New York in 2022 and North Carolina is only the 9th largest state compared to New York whom is now the 4th largest state. New York is in decline, they use to be the 3rd largest state, but lost ground to rapidly growing Florida. Texas saw the second largest gains of Americans moving to the state after Florida who lead the nation. Arkansas is actually growing, but at a much slower pace.

North Carolina has a strong biotechnology and computer science sector in the Research Triangle area so the Raleigh area and surrounding commuter municipalities like Apex, Cary Fuquay Varina, Wendell, Zebulon, Mebane, etc. have experienced rapid growth due to STEM job opportunities. The Charlotte metro which is more finance and business focused has also grown substantially. There is also a real estate boom in Brunswick county which is likely fueled by retires that are looking for a coastal location with low cost of living when compared to surrounding states like Florida.
