I live in Fukuoka which has one of the worst yakuza groups: the Kudo-Kai. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kudo-kai

Most Yakuza don't attack ordinary civilians but the Kudo-Kai have no sense of honor. So they often do things like lob grenades into bars and kill everyone inside. I really hate them. They're a bunch of scumbags and just low-level thugs.

One of the major crime incidents was in Kokura in 2003 where one of the members lobbed a grenade into a nightclub called Boorudo. The owner of the club was a leader of an anti-gang campaign so that Kudo-Kai targeted his club for attack, seriously injuring everyone inside including innocent women.

I also lost a very close friend several years ago to what I suspect was a Kudo-Kai attack. He had dealings with them being a bit of a gambling addict. My wife and I saw him at the local bar all cheerful and happy but next day the police found him hanging dead by a tree. They ruled it as suicide but I really think the Kudo-Kai framed it and set it up to make it look like a suicide. There's no way for anyone who knew him closely that he'd commit suicide like that.

I have heard, Japanese police are cracking down on Yakuza gangs in the last ten+ years or so? Are they doing this selectively, only to certain gangs in certain cities or generally?

@DryGermanGuy Thankfully throughout Japan to my understanding and in a generalized way. They are definitely cracking down here and doing a good job and also Tokyo (where I lived before Kyushu). A lot of Yakuza are being reduced to increasingly petty crimes like smuggling underground pornography.
