I'd say contex matters greatly..."32-year-old white female became agitated that her half-caf, skinny, three pump vanilla, soy fuckaccino was served with a fly in the straw" is relatively disimpassioned vs "some uppity white woman done gone crazy up in there". Plus, I'm military, there are no women or men, only males and females.

My husband is military and he'd never refer to any of his soldiers as male or female. He also runs pregnancy PT. I'm pretty sure he'd get knocked out by a pregnant woman if he called them "females" 😂

@Apple1996 I've never heard any component of regular or irregular U. S. forces use the term men and women in a professional context. Male and female is literally written on all the clothing and equipment that's gender segregated.

Plus in my government work since then, I'm never going to request a woman officer over the radio I'm going to request a female officer. Somehow we make it through operations without anyone getting knocked out. Well, at least for that.

@Apple1996 I'm on base 3 days a week as a liaison for my current job. Still very much like that. Maybe you're in the new army or something, but east coast and midwest isn't doing that. "Hey do you know where the female barracks are at that are being remodeled? No it's somewhere over there I think. Go ask those two males at the smokepit with their hands in their frickin air force pockets, if not there's a female inside third door on the left that lives there, she could tell you."

The obvious part of the answer is that it's just like calling a man "male" (or calling a quality of a man a "male quality", if we use it as an adjective - think "male pride" and the like). Now, as an adjective, it's perfectly fine, though I guess "manly" and "womanly" sound more dignified. As for the noun version... Both these forms might sound a bit condescending, as they can be used to describe animals (even though they are also the official way to designate a given person's sex on IDs and other similar documents). Now... It's worth keeping in mind that while "female" is far more respectful than "bitch", a feminist will still consider it a reason to get offended, and an offended feminist is probably the most dangerous threat for a Western man during peacetime. Thus, I'd rather differentiate between "woman" and "feminist", using the latter whenever I'm tempted to use "female", as "feminist" does not possess a well-known negative meaning, but it still conveys the right message to anyone in the know (as long as it's not used as a formal sex designation of a given person - in this case, I believe it's fine to continue using "male" and "female").
