The US has warned Russia not to deploy nuclear weapons in space, noting it would violate a 1967 treaty that bars weapons of mass destruction in space. It marks the first indication of the Biden administration’s approach to Rep. Mike Turner’s (R, OH-10) warning last week alluding to a “serious national security threat.”

Details—including whether such an anti-satellite weapon could be nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed—have not been made public. Any nuclear weapon detonated in space would indiscriminately release a large burst of gamma radiation. That could destroy or damage over 7,000 satellites currently in operation and critical to a range of systems, including GPS, phone and internet usage, financial systems, space surveillance, and missile defense. Russia could deploy the weapon into orbit as soon as this year, according to US sources.

It would make sense with Russia's longer term approach. I have been saying for about 3 years that given the current circumstances around the world we are likely to see a major world conflict by 2030 especially if things continue as they have been.

It would not surprise me if both the US and Russia have nukes in space. There have been many rockets sent into space where the payload was classified.

We are supposed to have a couple of "satellite killers" in orbit that can take others out. I have no clue if that is true or if they have even been used yet. With all the space junk up there, who knows anything?

you know there's this thing where if you shoot "anything" that orbits earth right now, you'll cause a chain event that spirals into a complete whipeout for everything that is up there. that's why nobody shoots intel satelites.

If World War 3 , yes. Then US couldn't see anything , but neither could they. US would assume nuclear attack imminent and probably launch nukes first. Have you seen movie with Jason Robards in the Day after? Night into Day ? Threads 1984 was England;s version day after? All three were good.

The way that whole “major security threat” that they didn’t disclose but left people panicked even though there was “no cause for alarm” seems fishy. They are in the middle of budget negotiations and they are about to cut off funding for Ukraine. It would not surprise me if this was a last ditch effort to try to get people panicked enough to call their representatives and demand funding against Russia.
