Why do you think Trump underperformed in Utah primary?

Trump won only 57% of vote, compared to Nikki Haley 42%. His worst result, except for D. C, Vermont and New Hampshire. He performed better even in states like California, Maine and Massachussets even though Utah is considered a ruby red state.

This is an easy question to answer.

Utah is dominated by Mormons and they have a strong sense of morality unlike other hypocritical religious groups. They practice what they preach.

Trump is practically the antithesis of a Mormon. The only reason why Trump gets votes is that some of the Utah voters - especially the conservative non-Mormon voters - put aside his personality and are simply voting along conservative lines. But many voters in the Utah GOP primary didn't put aside Trump's personal failings and voted for Nikki since she, too, is conservative, but doesn't carry the deplorable baggage that Trump has.

While not likely, it is conceivable that Trump would lose Utah in the general election because his actions associated with the aftermath of the 2020 election and especially January 6th 2021 were something that caused many of them to no support him going forward.

I suspect that the Mormon moral judgment on Trump is a bit more harsh than what he receives elsewhere.

The case is Trump even performed worse in Salt Lake City, than in Boston, Detroit, Raleigh. Nashville, Memphis etc. And Salt Lake City is considered pretty centrist, comparing f. e. to Boston.

@Cubus You can try to spin it all you want, but a recent poll showed that 97% of people who voted for Trump in 2020 plan to do so in 2024 - meaning he lost about 3% of his previous supporters. 85% of Biden voters who voted for him in 2020 plan to do so in 2024. Since we all know Biden got the most legitimate votes ever with 81 mil, he’s lost 12 million voters.
