The media likes to smear the "right wing" label over everything they don't like so they can scare people and sell more news. Truth be told, that's really the reason. The story is never "Psychotropic-pill-popping nutcase shoots up shopping mall" because big pharma pays for lots of advertising and they profit off those medications. Also, lots of left-leaning people happen to take psychotropic medications.

A surprising number of those shooters actually lean left, interestingly, but the media likes to do a shit job of reporting that because of the conflict of interest.
