We, as a culture, got lucky this time, but that just means that next time, we'll be less cautious.

Inflation, on the level we're seeing now, comes from a rise in money without a corresponding rise in wealth. If it were simply idiotic energy decisions (like pushing cars that are, PROPORTIONATELY as well as in absolute numbers, more likely to kill you than Pintos), then reversing those decisions would undo much of the damage. We're not that lucky.
