Reagan was always my political hero. Trump is nothing like him. I never liked Trump even before he was in politics. And I don’t understand the idol worship of him. Like he’s the second coming or something. Many of his views are not orthodox conservatism, and I’m not going to change mine…. Also, many of the wealthy job creators that support him, if I had a track record of behaving like he does, they would never hire me for their companies. But they can hire him for the most important job in the world?

I agree completely. Reagan was one of the best presidents this country has ever had. Trump is nothing like Reagan. He is also not a conservative. Politically he has always straddled the line between conservative and liberal.

He's an asshole and has been an asshole ever since he's been in the news going back at least to the 80s. I actually remember the first time I saw him on TV in the 80s. It was an interview for something. I just remember thinking "this guy is a total arrogant asshole". That has not changed in the last 40 years.

What I haven't figured out is why his popularity with conservatives is actually increasing. I understand why people voted for him in 1016 and 2020. But voting for him is not the same as actually liking him. There seem to be more conservatives who like him now than before, and that baffles me.

Because, as you say, he's nothing like Reagan. No involvement with McCarthyism, no sending hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people into homeless and crime with a "try not to be so crazy" as their only support, no grant-rigging, so S&L bailout, no using taxpayer money to directly undermine the democratic process via an Orwellianly-named "office of public safety", no Sewergate, no vetoing anti-Apartheid laws, no smuggling drugs to fund South American death squads, and no committing high treason while in office.

Reagan was pretty far from a orthodox conservative, too, and that's WITHOUT counting the crimes that should've seen him put before a firing squad. But Trump, compared to Reagan, is a living Saint. Granted, that's also true of the average man in the street, but still.

Dude, Reagan is the reason we're in this freaking mess in the USA. He's the one who started the tax breaks for corporations and launched the elimination of the middle class with his pro-rich policies. You should do some research on Reagan and take him down off your pedestal. Trickle-down economics has ruined the USA.

Why Reagan was one of the worst

Trump is worshipped by ignorant people who are incapable of critical analysis. He's a con man. How does ANY cult leader gain members for their cult; they lie, they feed on fears and tell you it's ok to hate those who you hate. In that way, you love the freedom to vent your hatred and you love your leader. Trump taps into this low level of intellect naturally because he truly does operate like a 3rd grader, although some is by design by those around him.

Trump is very unconventional but that is the point. He is an outsider and not part of the Washington culture. Just by his presence as the Commander in Chief he makes it difficult for the "go along to get along" culture in DC.

Does anyone thing that America's prosperity from the time Trump took office to the time that Covid shut the country down was an accident? Does anyone thing that the rapid decline for the country after Biden was sworn in was a coincidence?
