I only pick fights when people are wrong about things.
If they change their stance and stop being wrong, I have no reason to fight them any more.
That said usually people will take their wrongness to the grave with them... so the grave is generally where they belong.

I'd fight to defend the US from invasion. I'd fight to protect my family and friends and myself.

I would not fight because my commander in chief wanted me to go 3,000 miles to take sides in some other country's civil war

When write “cause”, you’re referring to something grandiose, something bigger than yourself, right?
Cuz i’m certain that all higher beings have a sense of self preservation. You would certainly fight to protect your own life, or that of your family, right?

I would gladly give my life for my biological kids or my students. I've had a full life, they haven't. Tbh I'm beginning to wonder about the self-preservation instinct given the dramatic increase in suicides all over the world.

Dying to save your family isn’t the best option. Once you’re dead, the threat to them doesn’t magically vanish. I would kill for my people. I’m difficulty relating to your position.
Suicide, i would argue, is usually the result of untreated mental and emotional illness. As an alcoholic, working with other alcoholics and drug addicts, i’ve seen firsthand how disease degrades our sense of self preservation. It’s shocking and tragic.

Interesting! I'm sober 8 years now. Maybe there is something to that. I was also presuming, probably falsely, that my demise would stop or lessen the threat. Good points!
