The problem is that older school buses can be retrofitted cheaply to lower emissions till the proper infrastructure is in place and replace buses each year not all at once. My children have graduated and have good jobs in Nursing And former deputy Commissioner of Sanitation in NY and one is a welder in a shipyard. These busses also have many known problems and significant limitations. A few other jurisdictions tried these busses but they are all parked now.

Yes that's about right Now consider a large city replacing thousands of busses If you can find reliable busses at about a million apiece can they be replaced all at once or a few at a time since all of NYC is defunding [even tho they say no ] the police fire dept, sanitation education, homeless to take care of illegals there is maybe enough to buy one or two a year. NYC has a few electric buses and also higher than normal breakdowns, when a bus runs out of power it has to be towed to a charging station which does not save money. We cannot afford to go willy-nilly to change to an unproven means of transportation it has to be done carefully over time to make sure all infrastructure is in place and enough to support what we have. Above all else, it must be reliable

Okay so you’re specifically referring to the biden administration approving a new grouping of electric buses with priority to schools in highly polluted or “disadvantaged” communities, right? Again, I’m failing to see what the issue is. It’s a cut and dry budget call that doesn’t carry the complications of trying to add or take away anything from the education system’s requirements for education, especially considering how politicians are incredibly sensitive to what schools do or don’t teach kids. You have to read both sides on ev s car buses boats and even battle tanks. Just digging for lithium is an environmental catastrophe processing it is worse. Costs to buy cars and busses are high Maintenance is high. Battery replacement is almost as much as a new car getting rid of lithium batteries is an environmental nightmare. Older buses can be refitted to lower emissions to almost nothing at a quarter of the cost of a new bus. Thus there is no reason to spend that money that can be used for other things and technology can improve. The big plus is that money can be spent on our failing schools not just being transported to failing schools but learn something

The money IS being spent on failing schools. You think failing schools all have perfectly accurate buses? The buses allow for more kids to have access to school without relying on their parents to take them when they might not be able to or risk getting there themselves on bikes or sidewalks. This is a good thing, and EVs last longer than your standard oil vehicle. Whether you agree with Biden’s choices or not, with how heavily divided the two parties are in the US, coming together to agree schools should have more and better buses for the increasing number of students is ultimately a good thing
