Sorry, I have to say social media is ruining people's mental health. If the only thing you see on there is people's best moments, it's inevitable that you'll compare your life to that.

I used to have a small fragrance collection (15 maybe) of scents I really enjoyed. I found a community on Instagram where all they did was talk and post new products that launched, companies that opened up, influencers with their own fragrance lines. It was bottomless and it sent me on a whirl wind of spending.
A lot of my fragrances aren’t even ones I enjoy but forced to buy because that community pumped it into me. Blind buying alcohol water with smells I didn’t even like. I can honestly say I’ve dogged upwards of $30K on perfume bottles. Not enough to finish in this lifetime.
It consumes me and my relationship for a time.
I closed my media account early last year and pretty much stopped buying fragrances. I’ve sold a lot or giving a lot away but I still have so many.
I know it’s not serious to some but it ate up a lot of me physically and mentally. There are some fragrances I absolutely hate but because the bottles cost so much, I cannot seem to let go.
Social media is destroying mental health! This is the only social media I have I don't want Facebook or Instagram or whatever else is out there. I'd rather have a relationship with a person not a phone or a computer. Kids have phones at really young ages and they don't develop their social skills. My parents made sure I always had real experiences with my friends and not hiding behind a phone! They are continuing that with my younger brother and sister. I can actually say that growing up I knew how to play outdoors with real kids and not video games. Most kids have no clue how to actually play unless they have a video controller in their hands!! They have no imagination at all. I think it's terrible what we have become as a society and what we turned our children into.

Access to guns isn't the problem. Switzerland has more households with guns than the USA because it's a requirement there, but I don't recall a mass shooting there in my lifetime.
I was depressed and bullied as a teenager and I had access to guns through my school in England - and I'm a qualified marksman and shooting instructor by age 15, when I was most depressed and the bullying at its worst. I didn't kill anyone.
Desensitisation through exposure is the problem.
Look at R rated movies from 1985 and compare them to today's. Terminator would get a 15 now at most - for language. T2 probably a PG13.
Consider that with the free access to graphic sex and violence online today. Society is fucked up.

If something is part of your life then it affects you. When you consider how much screen time people clock up it's not surprising it's hitting people's mental health.
Your demonised for voting the wrong way, ridiculed because you've been eating bananas the wrong way all your life, bombarded with crap about how your undateable because your not 7ft tall, and of course everyone else is living the perfect dream life bar you.
It's easy to scoff at people but it's a drip drip effect and can get under your skin without you knowing.
I agree that saying social media is the reason why school shootings happen is a hell of a leap. But I won’t deny that there’s evidence to suggest a lot of social media platforms are made to keep you scrolling and prolonged exposure can indeed have a negative effect mentally. What’s needed isn’t restriction but education on how to better curate your online experience as well as just keep yourself safe online. There are way too many kids just happily saying their real names and phone numbers online and exposing themselves. It would help to have education on identifying not just click-bait or AI posts but also just figuring out misinformation, not giving in to that first knee jerk reaction of outrage when something makes you upset.

Social media can be a powerful communication tool. It could bring us together. However it seems to be doing the opposite. Behaviors that would never happen face to face are common place in the world of social media. Disinformation is rampant. Yet used carefully and critically it can make our lives better. The key is educating your self properly and making sure you are the master and not the slave of this technology.
I read something just yesterday that what we see online affects us more than we think. It does have an affect on our mental health. But sometimes what we wear, listen to, and eat also affects our mental health (or at least in my experience I found that out for myself).
I think that it is the source of unhappiness for a lot of people. Kids are bullied on social media and some people feel like their lives are not as good as others. You need a healthy attitude about it and use it as a tool and not let you're life get consumed by it.

Social media does have a negative effect. I don't understand why parents don't have their kids play outside more often instead of going online. When I was a kid, that's what we did when we were bored, we went outside and played.
Probably. Actually, I'll say yes, it is. I'm old enough to remember a time when we just didn't have it, and people really were, on average, much happier and well-balanced.
In a word, yes. You could say it is the parents that let their kids use social media. But plenty of people who grew up without social media are also suffering the same problems.
The smart phone has made everyone idots with brains that can't think.
Depression has many causes. I do'tthink social media is one of them.
