A young man with autism and tourettes died in jail. Where is the outrage?

Recently, a 20 year old autistic young man died while in jail. Cops were dispatched to an apartment for someone making noise. Upon contact with the young man who also has tourettes, they discovered he had an unknown outstanding warrant. They arrested him and took him to jail.

While in the cell, he endured horrific treatment by correctional officers. There was absolutely no compassion or understanding of his disability, as he was writhing on the floor having an autistic meltdown situation. He died as a result of head injuries.

This young man was disabled and treated unimaginably with horror. This occurred in Ohio.

I see no protests, riots... nothing like the George Floyd incident. Maybe if his skin color was different, maybe there would have been different reaction. Regardless, this was a horrible case of in-custody abuse.

Note, the Sheriff claims no accountability. While I do not support the whole "defund the police" movement, keep in mind the local Sheriff is an elected official that oversees both patrol and corrections in his jurisdiction. Often, there is no checks and balances like you would see with other elected officials. There is often no consequences, other than just not being reelected again.

We need to rethink how we treat the disabled and mentally ill in the justice system.

Im pleased you bring this up, it is because it is not fashionable enough and because the woke brigade find it fashionable to be against the disabled. Think of all those equality banners at protests and equality t shirts, they never mention disability. I have know people to buy a equality t shirt but have it amended beforehand to remove the disability part. They are the ones that are the most likely to be ableist, it is like you are not allowed to be racist towards black criminals but people think it is ok to be ableist towards disabled criminals.

I also find that disabled criminals get more hate then non disabled criminals. I also find that it is mostly women under 40 that are ableist mainly towards the learning disabled and i think the reason why is because 9 out of 10 people with learning disabilities are men. Feminism is a lot of the blame here, they campaign for women to take disabled people's access on buses and in car parks, they campaigned for disability abortion.

It is a total disgrace how hypocritical these equality campaigners are, they have the audacity to complain about various isms and phobias then take the attitude towards the disabled.

I felt the same during the lockdown, disabled people being denied life saving treatment because of their disability and people ignoring it. It was all about the BLM. I also notice that disability petitions get significantly less signatures then other petitions for minority groups. The disability campaigns are far more worthy and genuine then other equality campaigns and for just reasons other then just snowflake stuff.

We need to rethink the way disabled people are treat throughout society and all public services as well as justice.

The mentally ill is the one demographic that is actually persecuted in the United States.

That’s why many people with mental illnesses don’t seek treatment because they are afraid of being victimized by the authoritarian regime that controls this country. There is so much ignorance about mental illness that many people incorrectly assume that any kind of mental illness means that the person is “crazy”.

• Most correctional officers are incompetent pieces of excrement who don’t give a damn about the inmates that are under their care. I’m surprised there isn’t more anti correctional officer sentiment.
• The only difference between a sheriff deputy and a police officer is that Sheriff deputies are in charge of the whole county, while police are only in charge of a city.

The Sheriff is mostly always an elected official. In my state, even the county commission has no oversight of the Sheriff. It is its own autonomous elected office. While you are correct about the Sheriff having county jurisdiction vs the municipal police forces, police departments are at least under the supervision of the city or town board or mayor. The Sheriff doesn't have oversight. The citizens vote him into office for a 4 year term. It is easy to get him in, very difficult if not almost impossible to get him out until the next election rolls around.

Autists aren't collectivist. "We", in as much as one can even ascribe the plural, don't act collectively, and don't feel any strong sense of unity with other Autists.
That, unfortunately, is why a lot of "us" end up falsely represented by mundanes who are trying to feel collective outrage by proxy but have no first-hand experience of what it is like to truly be an individual.
For that reason, "we" will be the last acceptable target when all others have been opposed by the mob.

I really liked that response. I was diagnosed with what was called Asperger's Syndrome at the time. I am very high functioning. What happened to that young man is my worst nightmare. I never want to see this happen to me or my kids one day. This was absolutely abhorrent.

Haven't heard that one before, but you're right, and I believe one of the reasons for the persecution (yes, I'm not being hyperbolic when I use that word) of those who are truly different (as opposed to just pretending to be different for social status and points), is the fact that the majority are shallow, need peer approval and acceptance, and can't think for themselves. And when they encounter one of us, they are forced to confront these uncomfortable facts, and that severely triggers them.

@PA19062024 : They're not aware of anything, so they can't confront any of that. Their highest means of judging anything is by commonality. To them, normal = good, abnormal = bad, and if your problems don't have a hundred other voices to back them up then they don't believe those problems exist. I am not surprised at all, as I have seen several other harsh and incompetent treatments of mentally ill people. The average training of American police/prison personnel creates one large Milgram experiment, 24/7/365. If the procedure handbook reads that you will be smashed into the ground with eight people on top of you, then that’s what they will do, no matter the outcome.

I most certainly agree that the mentally ill and developmentally disabled should not be in prisons or jails, rather, should be evaluated and treated in most cases. Sadly, our jails have become the de-facto mental health "hospitals". But they are not hospitals whatsoever, and correctional staff have minimal to no training or education on how to handle the disabled or mentally ill. In thus young man's case, it should have been handled entirely different. He was begging to call his mom. They should have identified possible disabilities and involved family members in this situation.

I believe the entire George Floyd incident was everything to do with police brutality more so than a racial incident. I am not aware of proof that his death was racially motivated, other than he was black and the officer was white. But that alone does not prove the incident was racially motivated. The outcry should have been more emphasized and focused on the police brutality in general, regardless of the race of the suspect. The same situation can easily happen to a white man, an Asian man, a Hispanic man, and so on...

The same incidents do happen to people of other races the reason race was such a focus in my opinion is many blacks felt like they have for years said they they are treated with overly violent police and this was the biggest show of it at the time I have bo clue if it truly was race related and to be honest don't even care it was a good show that many police like the 1 in question only know how to end a situation with violence that can end with a death many need additional training in deescalation and dealing with the public that may have mental health disorders or on the spectrum

I used to work closely with law enforcement. I do agree many of them are unhinged with a high ego and little self-control over strength and magnitude of their reactions. Not all law enforcement officers are bad, but there is much reform that is needed in that profession. Some may just be oblivious of mental illness and have not been trained to deal with them. For others, even with training, they may be just cold hearted regardless.
