No. They bombed Ukraine because they thought that the Ukrainian people would view them as saviors and flock to rejoin the Russian empire. The relationship between Ukraine and Russias people were reasonably good before the war (much of the population of Ukraine, especially in the regions Russia is currently occupying was already Russian before the war). The fact that Russia had a good grip over the population was a major motivation for starting the war in the first place. The common history makes it easier for the people to accept their occupation and annexation.

The bad blood between Russia and Ukraine only reignited after the war started. It is a result of the war that Russia simply did not predict beforehand.

It's a plethora of "reasons", all of which are subordinated under Putin's vision of recreating the Soviet Empire with all its military power. This is supposed to be Putin's legacy. Which of course will fail with the help of the ever-expanding Ukrainian alliance. It will be 1991 all over again.

Everyone with half a brain abandoned Russia. This is what happens when a bully finds itself out of favour, everyone leaves. Czechoslovakia, Hungary both invaded by Russia because they wanted more freedoms, Baltic States, Georgia, etc.

Russia invaded as it follows a long pattern through its history.
The moment the old Warsaw pact nations left, they requested to join NATO, not the other way around.
