But would such a law work elsewhere? Say America where misinformation is a bigger problem?

Here is the thing, how do we know when a lie is malicious, known, or just a fib to hide government secrets from falling into our enemies also a truth one year could be a falsehood in a next. This is why I believe that there can’t be an effective system to debunk lies except when the media & the people Fact Check with credible sources that are center NOT left or right or conservative or progressive.
Politicians can lie about policies and such, as a reminder that Donald J Trump promised infrastructure, veteran benefits, job investments, pulling out of Afghanistan, “we’re rounding the corner”, “2020 election was stolen from us”, etc.
How do we fight the misinformation and lies? By the facts: President Biden passed Infrastructure, Pact Act (veteran benefits), pulled us out of Afghanistan entirely in one term, said that he would put his pandemic relief plan in place American Rescue Plan and showcased the plan before passing it into legislation, JOB INVESTMENTS via the Chips And Science Act & Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Expanded The Affordable Care Act/Obamacare.
Donald J Trump also promised to kill Tiktok and kill Affordable Care Act/Obamacare. Trump has no went against Biden’s legislation to ban it in 9 months if it isn’t sold off to a non Chinese company also Trump now wants to expand Affordable Care Act/Obamacare after wanting to repeal for a better plan of his own creation (never released the plan)
We MUST hold politicians accountable for lies VIA Fact Checking.
Why was gas prices cheaper during Trump’s Administration? Lockdowns, less people driving during a pandemic because they don’t want to get sick / are working from home and getting education virtually from home too.
Why is immigration deportations & tariffs bad for the economy? Getting rid of a low skilled workforce willing to work in horrible conditions for chicken scratch AND tariffs have a historical negative impact on the American consumer due to rising costs for lower quantity of import goods & more.
At the debate, he admitted he knew about the attack and didn’t do anything. I would like to remind everyone that one of the many powers that a President has is MOVING TROOPS without Congress’ permission however can’t declare war without Congress’ permission. In the debate, Trump admitted that he controlled the National Guard to control a peaceful protest on the streets so, he could do a photo-op holding a Bible upside down. “It’s a Bible”(when asked by press if it was his). So to lie that Nancy Pelosi had some sort of ‘Girl Power’ stronger than the POTUS is a bold faced lie. In addition, Trump during the debate ADMITTED he knew that chaos would attack the Capitol yet still provided the buses to his supporters to get to the Ellipse, still told his people to go to the Capitol, and still Tweeted, “Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!”
AND THIS, “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!”
FACTS MATTER and this context really pieces together Trump’s agenda for January 6th.
That sounds like a nice idea, in theory.
Very nice.
In practice, though, imagine the tsunami of litigation that would be filed just in the first few minutes of such a law going into effect.
It'd take decades of time and more than the Gross World Product in funding just to settle the first days' worth of actions that would be filed.
My estimates come from the top of my head, of course, but would it be worth expending any effort in researching that which is blatantly obvious?
Criminal prosecution might, no, would, have the entire world being tried.
Everyone lies.
We're all human, we're going to lie, there's no getting around that fact.
I hope that we're all humans, anyway.
I don't think that any ETs will be revealing themselves willingly as a result of this grand endeavor going into effect.
Regarding the subject of identifying politicians, just to point out where such action could lead, I'm going to now stretch this point, ad realisticum:
Let's consider, for a moment at least, that anyone, anyone at all, who voices an opinion on anything concerning the "public", can be considered to be a politician to some degree.
Is that not so?
The primary definition of "politician" is of one who, as a profession, engages in the influencing of policy, at whatever level of society they practice their "craft".
A secondary, wholly valid definition of "politician" is anyone at all who attempts to influence public policy by making their opinion known.
With extremely few exceptions then, everyone is a politician to some degree.
Ergo, everyone then would be open to prosecution or litigation as a result of such legislation being enacted into law.
If such measures were to be globally initiated, instead of producing goods and services, the entire world would be solely engaged in litigation or criminal prosecution.
What are we going to eat, what are we going to wear, where shall we reside?
The world as we know it would quickly collapse.
I'm thinking that far more drastic, realistically viable, measures must be taken.
U. S. citizen here.
Thanks for providing the stump upon which I eagerly chose to stand to promote my own political agenda.
I find it somewhat ironic that I, "nolabels", must, by definition, be what is known (labeled) as a politician.
That's okay, I guess, as I chose my username, "nolabels", for reasons primarily other than those simply regarding politics, although politics did play somewhat of a role in my choosing my username.
That's a complicated topic, though, to be discussed more fully elsewhere.
Good day to all.
Politicians should not be allowed to lie but the reason most countries do not enforce this rule is the a politician might make a proposition about what they will do and then the situation changes and they learn the proposal was a bad idea. Governments want to give politicians the option of discarding bad ideas which is why they are not punished when they discard election promises. But I agree that pathological and intentional liars should be severely punished.
It should be! And if they get caught, 2-5 year prison term.

If politicians are public servants, nearly every other public servant I am aware of incurs penalty for lies. Except for the Police but that is primarily when dealing with persons of interest, suspects etc which is why you don't talk to them. Not only should telling lies be penalized but I firmly believe that term limits should be enacted, financial monitoring to see any income increase while serving they should be audited immediately and thoroughly. Running as one party and then getting elected only to switch parties? That deception of the voting public should be punished not now but RIGHT NOW! Party as well as candidates. They say drain the swamp but they remove the drainage pumps and clog the drains. Swamp is rising according to plan and the sheep disguised as fools or the other way around, make excuses for them, vote party line no matter what and claim to be patriots? "Give me liberty if you have any left after selling it to Corporate interests and donors, or give me higher taxes, gas prices, grocery prices but send the Ukraine and Israel every penny they need as the homeless numbers skyrocket and rent prices fuel the launch. The love America but HATE Americans. Until it's time to go to war... send us your children to fight for freedom but freedom is being raped domestically not where the troops are sent. Guard that poppy field, oil and lithium mines boys.. serve your country, defend democracy and if you happen to pay the Ultimate price and make the Ultimate sacrifice we have a brand new folded flag, Made In China for momma..
You can't accuse them of lying with legal consequences when, in reality, they are overly optimistic. Basically, you're saying everyone even trying politics should be arrested for a job that needs to be filled.
"Vote for me because the reality is our side will eat shit and die, so why even care?" Is that how we want life?
The reality is there is a point in being a zealot advocate for your position on politics. Then they actually do the day-to-day politics that need to be done. The reality is the truly tough stuff is on the everyday people.
Like the "just stop oil people" being unpopular today and getting hurt today could change global politics even as small as it is.
But asking politicians not to lie is honestly worse and more disappointing then doing nothing.
Do you not understand that every 'law' you pass is simply to a permission slip of the politicians in power to use such power against their enemies?
How is it that you can see this behavior all the time on both sides and not recognize this is the nature of Government 'laws'?
How is it that you can presume then that authorizing the in power politicians with the presumed power to read the minds of everyone and deem what is intentionally 'incorrect' would not be done abusively?
At what point did politicians become capable and honest mind-readers?
At what point did your politicians gain the ability to tell the truth beyond even our greatest scientist?
As neither had ever happened your just giving said leaders despotic power with such a law.
Would be a wonderful idea! One problem would be. Who would the Fact Checkers be? Would you put everyone under oath whenever politicians announce their intentions on running for office?
Would the news media and the White House’s spokesperson (KJP) be held to the same standards?
What would the penalty be for lying?
Since most politicians only lie when their mouths are moving. How many people would be left to hold office?
> "But would such a law work elsewhere?"
No. Empty promises are the main tool of politics. That's why I don't go to elections or I make so called protest votes for absolutely unacceptable parties just for the sake to steal votes from establishment parties. Politician hate their voters so I give them a reason to hate me. lol
It's a neutral environment for European politicians (Democratic):-"In a country (a state)-Might work/where:-democratic (labour/liberal) union gets most seats tend be political for people within the state (they voted to be truer) and the republican (conservative/conservative) union gets least seats tends to be aristocratic (they voted to be a mere fact check):-'some-what glamourosly convinceable')-Mick William (a dead world war 2 Sargent veteran of USA/also-'fought for the UK 'gate of revolution/London caffe corner') so, contrary to this:-'yes, if telli'n truth a policy...'
The moral high demand:-"Honesty is the truest formal sense of policy"
Didn't they pass a bill back in the 1800s that you could not be a politician if you didn't lie so I think in order to be a politician you have to be a liar which means you have to be a cheater and a thief and you have to be selfish and do it only the good old boys do and girls. . Maybe one of these days before it's too late we will all stand up, No matter what country you're from and so we don't want this no more.
That would be the end of politics. Politicians' primary job description is lying to the citizenry, especially in a world where lies are truth and truth is considered to be lies.
People get censored, blocked, banned, deplatformed, demonitized, fired and imprisoned for telling the truth while politicians, government officials, profiteers, and media lie and disinform for a living.
So who would determine what is a lie?
Yes, but it's important to keep in mind that it will be abused by partisan politics. And laws like this should really only cover official hearings and not everyday life like tv speeches or social media posts. That would be excessive. They can just be sworn in to all official hearings.
That's a vicious question, considering politicians have not always the choice to get elected... By the way, I thought that politicians were not supposed to lie, and that it is in any case illegal already, isn't it? Legal or not, a politician remains a politician, and all in all, it's first of all about interests of any kind...
That will only lead to more silly lawsuits that target to sabotage chances for re-elections.
A more civilized way (can be debated) would be to raid a major government building, damage a few things there, and then claim a great victory in the cause of being freedomized.
YES!! Can you imagine how much better our entire government would be if no politician can lie? Holy fuck. This would also greatly change American politics as a whole, politicians won’t be able to get away with swaying people to vote for them by influencing their emotions because typically when politicians do just that, they’re lying
This would never work. What's the definition of a lie... versus stretching the truth. If someone is given false information and believes it to be true, is it a lie when they say it?
It should be illegal, and Trump would be guilty of enough of it to keep him in prison till the year 2525. But the immoral Republicans would wipe his slate clean and continue the same lying themselves.
it's not illegal to lie in general so why do you think politicians would allow this on themselves?
you can lie about rape, you can lie about being faithful, you can lie about beating up Mike Tyson, you can lie about anything and not be punished
I think any politician speaking in his official capacity should be assumed to be under oath.
Burns me up to watch a US senator or congressman grill someone who is under oath while the congressman or senator can lie his ass off. And if one of his colleagues calls him a liar, the colleague is reprimanded!
If it was illegal for politicians to lie, they wouldn't know what to say because they all lie.
Especially the president.
What if the judicial system and law enforcement lie? Who is monitoring them?
I think more important than setting some sort of punishment for lying is that people develop their critical thinking and seek the truth. More important than punishing liars is to not believe the lies. What I mean is that it should work both ways, not just on the part of politicians.
Very bad idea. Political speech is supposed to be protected speech and politicians can always be fact-checked besides the fact that we know not to believe most or even anything they say.
I wish they'd do that honestly. Every politician should be hooked to a lie detector when giving their speeches. That would change society entirely.
If it became illegal for politicians to lie, Censorship and Political correctness would quickly start crashing down along with the left wing ideas that are built on a foundation of political lies. Make political lies illegal again.
We have the first amendment that gives people freedom to lie. What we really need is term limits.
That's radical! They'll just get people to lie on their behalf, though.
that better be a strong spell instead, lmfao...
Not necessarily illegal, but there sure should be consequences.
It'll never work. What counts as a "lie"? And also, you can't make it illegal to lie because of free speech
Since they decide what truth is, it’ll be a mute point.
"Labour government says it could do more harm than good", yes, to them. Surprise surprise, leftist government dislikes honesty policies.
Sure, yet the world is run by lobbyists and puppetry sigh 😔😭
That sounds like the biggest bullshitx I've ever seen. Lies are all over politics there is no way to stop it. Even if it was illegal, they would still lie in another kinds of ways. But go on, and make the law i just don't think itll be helpful
Should it be illegal for the news media to lie?
It is illegal. When they're speaking to Congress and they lie, it's perjury. When they lie on television, it's fraud.
Trump was impeached twice and each time evidence proved he was guilty. But the Senate, fun by corrupt Republicans, refused to penalize him. www.law.cornell.edu/.../president-donald-trump-and-impeachable-offenses
Doesn't make a difference
We'd be in the delightful position of having no politicians. I'm all for it. Bring it to England and the UK!
Simples...
There should be penalties for
Of course not! Ridiculous!! It should be up to the institutions and voters to assess vetacity.
Uh, politicians don't care about laws... laws are for the common citizen...
No one should lie, thou shalt not lie is one of the ten commandments.
Should be, but now, here in the US it is legal for sitting presidents to call in air strikes on their political rivals
That's like expecting lambs when all you have is ewe's, practically impossible.
All political figures should be hanged if found to be lying. USA would have to start from scratch if that was the case.
Such a law will never pass in the USA.
A law is only as good as it's enforcers.
Would be nice.
Shouldn't it ALWAYS be illegal for anyone to lie?
It should be illegal to be politicians
Yeah
