So you are going to give criminals and illegals (not all are of military age) military training and give them weapons. Would you be comfortable with a few of those behind you with weapons? Say a bunch of illegals or criminals forced into the military, given weapons and now standing behind you with weapons? Or would you rather have people that volunteered to join and now have your back?

I agree, to an extent. Volunteers sans criminal records don't always equate to non criminality but it likely, usually, adds less fuel to the fire.

@osmanthus training even volunteers requires a level of intelligence, this is why there are entry requirements.
We are fully volunteer and moving to bringing in criminals and illegals simply would not work in any shape or form.

First, why would you conscript non-citizens who technically have no stake in the country as the ones who have to protect it?

Moreover, aside from the fact that's it's a bad idea, it's even more immoral than the idea of a draft in the first place. Imagine the immigrant is an illegal refugee from the country they get sent to to fight? How messed up would that be? And what happens when they're done? Do they get booted back to the country they were just forced to attack?

And really, why would you want a bunch of people who are statically way more likely to have like grudges against society to have a bunch of weapons and training?

And what about violent criminals? I thought we wanted our soldiers to actually survive combat, not get taken out by friendly fire. Many probably wouldn't even qualify on the grounds of mental or physical health issues.

No. There is no absolute certainty to know the exact circumstances of an illegal nor the extent of criminality to which a person committed to follow through on; innocent people get mislabeled as either all the time.

Not only that but too smart criminals drafted into military may utilize what they've learnt and create further havoc, if and when, by chance, they fake death or manage to survive and not get reeled back into a prison cell. Life may be harder fod wardens, if they have to deal with such inmates, daily, from thereon out.

There are others ways, like making migration much more easily so people can actually legally migrate to other places.
