Is it illegal to burn the English flag?

A few weeks ago an englishman settled in our little Welsh village and put an English flag on a pole on top of his house. We weren't to happy with this display of colonialism and decided to peacefully protest by burning his flag. However the flag was quite high and none of us had a ladder so for health and safety reasons we thought it would be safer just to burn his house down.

Satisfied the offending flag no longer tarnished our peaceful village the local retired to their homes. However the council has hit us with a £10 fine for burning in a smoke free zone. Is this fair or are they just weaponizing the law against us?

I'm never sure if these stories are true or not, but it really doesn't matter.

This is just more proof that independence for Wales and Scotland should be in the cards, at least put it to a Welsh and Scottish vote. In the Brexit vote, only England voted to leave the EU, which because of its larger population, led the UK to a small majority o leave the EU. Both Wales and Scotland wanted to stay.

I can only imagine what would happen if I, an American, started flying a Russian flag. Don't worry... I have no intention of doing that.

It's a misconception that took Wales as it was actually the Normans. They took England in one day 1066 and later expanded over 300 years to chip away at Wales. But I agree with Stratford its now that counts not things that happened yonks ago and given millions who have cross-border lives we need better cooperation rather than separation and isolation.

It probably is in England. In the USA laws on burning things vary based on state law and city ordinances. Some of it is pretty arbitrary. For example: in the town where I grew up (Buckner, Missouri) there was a city ordinance against burning leaves on Sunday. Specifically Sunday and specifically leaves. So I guess it was legal to burn other things on Sundays and it's legal to burn leaves any other day of the week. It never made sense to me. As for flags, I think there is a federal law against burning the US flag, but I don't know of a law against burning other flags.

i would assume it is. its illegal in the states but if it touches the ground or u drop the flag its gotta be burned out of repsect. but u can't burn the flag on purpose. u can also dispose of the flag to ur local vfw

Sweet trolling. But in all honesty looking at this as a Swede, dearest Welsh, Scots and Irish: you lost to the English. Get over it. The medieval age, the imperial and pre-war age have all come and gone and you had your chances. You're well too late in this modern era to start "rioting over colonialism" and it only makes you vandalizers and jerks. Simply find some contentment in this era of modern law and order where there is no objectively oppressive English overlordship over you.

I think in this case the measures taken were appropriate in relation to the size of the problem so I don't think there should be any punishment. It seems like an abuse of power by the government to me. SMH
