EU fines Hungary €200 million for flouting asylum laws?

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is frequently at loggerheads with Brussels, immediately voiced outrage.

“The ECJ’s decision to fine Hungary with 200M euros plus 1M euros daily (!!!) for defending the borders of the European Union is outrageous and unacceptable,” the nationalist premier wrote on X.

“It seems that illegal migrants are more important to the Brussels bureaucrats than their own European citizens,” he added.

Either you want to be part of a union with all its rules, norms and regulations or you don’t. You can’t just take all the advantages and ignore the parts you don’t like as our esteemed British friends had to find out.

The EU is fining Hungary for much more than just breaching its laws, Hungary has been abusing its position within the EU for a very long time now so this is a regular occurrence. Also its not like Hungary is without options either. Aside from following the rules that Hungary themselves signed up for, they could just leave the EU. The EU only has authority over Hungary because they let themselves be part of it, its entirely voluntary.

And yes, the EU is entirely in the right to fine Hungary irrespective of what you think of the immigration laws themselves. This is about breaching EU regulation, as in any regulation. If you dont intend to follow the rules then you should not have signed up for them in the first place. Sounds pretty self explanatory to me, but what do I know right?

People forget when it comes to asylum seekers countries are bound by international laws as much as their own. This is why you can't simply sink dinghies crossing the channel or shoot people climbing a wall and why populist solutions aren't used by governments.

Well he is a fuckwit for starters and should be the main reason for Hungary to be removed from the EU. He is doing as much as possible to get as much money from the EU and to mess it up as much as possible. If you are in a club and it has rules you follow them or you leave the club. Also this is relatively old news as it’s from a beginning of June. The sooner the EU evict Hungary the better.

Strictly speaking, there are no actual method for other countries within the EU to kick someone out of the union. The only way for a country to leave is if they themselves want to leave. Just felt like I should point that out. I guess the people who wrote the rules did not really think this would be a problem.
