Can anyone explain to me how this is sustainable or why anyone thinks this is a good idea?

If you think that these illegals are making up for that $5 billion in NYC taxes by working... you're sorely mistaken as the majority are unemployed, and not looking for work.

The recent explosion in it is just a forcing of the issue; the US has faced an illegal immigration crisis for quite a long time. Any realistic long-term solution is going to HAVE to involve some kind of amnesty program (which doesn't necessarily mean giving them citizenship automatically); making their presence upfront and known so they can be located and dealt with is actually not a bad first step, and if the choice is to have them starve on the street or to put them up in cheap housing, the latter is considerably less expensive.

Of course, that's not what New York intends to actually do, but the rationale behind their decisions does have some sense behind it.

The smart thing to do, however, wouldn't've been to bus the illegal immigrants to the "sanctuary cities", but to the Capitol building. Move a few families in and tell Congress that they'll be staying here- and more will be arriving every week- until such time as they pass comprehensive immigration reform, that means you don't have to spend a small fortune and wait most of a decade for a roll of the dice. The immigration laws are awful, so let's have the people in charge of making them FIX THEIR OWN PROBLEM- and pay the price in annoyance until they do.

Yes, but the Capitol isn't, and the wealthy and powerful, there as anywhere else, hide behind walls and armed guards. I'm just saying we take that advantage away.

Leftist have trouble with budgeting, although in this case its because their politicians have trouble with appointing judges who care about the limits of the law more than their ideology.

Which is why in this case New York city is forced by its courts to spend large sums on illegal aliens.
