Why does the U. S. sit back and allow Israel to attack Iran? Then, after Israel attacks Iran, why does the US try to prevent Iran from taking revenge?

The U. S. does not want a war with Iran. Nevertheless, the U. S. moved ships and airplanes to the Middle East to scare Iran into refraining from hitting Israel.

But Tehran may not be intimidated. With the assassination of the Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh Israel killed a foreign state guest of Iran within Iran. The assassination demonstrated that Israel is not deterred from such acts. If Iran leaves this without consequences Israel would kill additional Iranian politicians. Therefore, Iran is determined to seek revenge:
