In better societies (mostly European countries like Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Findland, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland) women are treated as equals to men, which is how it should be. Women can bear children and that unmistakenly makes them extremely valuable, but without men there can be no children either and men play an important part in society, especially in a more primal environment.

Maybe in an evolutionary sense. It's been estimated that after the last Toba eruption there were only 10,000 surviving humans. A fraction of which were offspring producing females. Which created a genetic bottleneck for humans and had the cards fell just a little differently could have led to our extinction.
