My guess is they are just trying to head off a narrative of Ukraine being feeble and completely dependent on the US before the election. That or they genuinely saw a weakness in Russia's defenses and went for it.

The Russians have over committed in other areas, are running low on experienced officers, the only people allowed to make decisions at any level in the Russian military are officers. Ukraine has Russian territory, helps towards peace talks, exchange of land, called bluff on Russian instant nuclear. The next step is releasing Storm Shadows further inland and killing all logistic routes. Oh and a big piss take of the 3 day special operation.

1) Ukraines invasion to Russia is just bargaining chip. Ukraine knows when Trump gets to office then they might start to feel pressure from US to start negotiating with Russia. So by then they need some sort of leverage.

2) They want to humiliate Vladimir Putin that he does not have control over Kursk which might lead to unrest in Russia.

They want Russian territory so when the war ends they can bargen with Russia to return the Russian land to Russia in return for getting the Ukrainian land returned to Ukraine.
