I think it should be just as easy for immigrants today as it was for my ancestors when they came over in the late 19the century

When my ancestors got here America was nearly empty, and its goverment allowed vast freedom with no enormous welfare state requiring us all to fight over everything.

My ancestors also came almost excursively in manageable numbers from similar cultures that did assimilate well.

If you restore just most of those conditions we can have almost open borders. But without any of those conditions there is no place to put theses without creating ever larger problems we simply lack the freedom and flexibility to adapt to.

The sad fact is a multi-cultural highly regulated welfare state is not compatible with an open borders state.

@otterman68 In 1850 the total forign born population was only 9.7% and almost entirely from culturally similar and thus easly assimualted European states.

Today the forign born population is in excess of 13% when Trump left office you can add anther ~10 million to that since Biden opened the flood gates.

This population is furthermore far less cultural similar and thus easily assimilated which is why your seeing colonies being created.

Latins are more authoritarian, less individualist, more likely to abuse their position to advantage themselfs or their families & friends having a greater acceptance of said abuse perhaps via the greater admiration of the position of power itself.
Which is part of the reasons countries dominated by said culture fall to dictatorships soo much more easily.

They are also less direct in their communication, more protective of feelings as the focus of values tends to be more relationship than practical progress. A general problem behind Latin America's lagging economic performance and perhaps corruption.

@Juxtapose @otterman68 Don't get me wrong there are a lot of admirable aspects of latin culture and many of their trait were historically American traits pre-1960s that we would be better off returning to.

Also Latins like any culture in sufficiently small and isolated numbers would assimilate into the American culture. But those numbers are a small fraction of what now exist. Even smaller than a comparable population from overseas precisely because latin America is right next door and therefore there is less pressure to assimilate.

My ancestors have been in America since 1620. They lived in crude cabins, had no proper medical care, had scant rations, and lived very short lives. Should I do the same because that's what my ancestors did? Or am I being a hypocrite for living in a good house and eating at least two meals every day?

If your ancestors came over here with ZERO immigration regulations, and you think that that's too good for immigrants today, yes, you are a hypocrite.
It's the total opposite of your example.

Of course not. The paperwork to immigrate to America is a nightmare. That needs to be cleaned up and made simple. The two main things are my opinion that matter the most is an FBI background check and a medical check up. That’s actually the law but Biden doesn’t care about the law.

All four of my grandparents emigrated to this country a hundred years ago. They all had physicals before they were allowed to enter and they all had sponsors and jobs lined up. There was no welfare, free healthcare or even translators. They quickly learned English. Then years later they became citizens.

@OtterMan68 My grandpsrents apparently were able to make the cut and gain entry to the USA. They appreciated being here and my grandfather always displayed the little American flag he got when he became a citizen. These are the people America needs. We do not need uneducated, indigent people who come to America by breaking our laws and then sign up for every benefit that they can.

There is no "should". Immigration is a privilege, not a right and requirements can be COMPLETELY arbitrary or more restrictive overtime as the need arises.
