Complicated. Words are really only usages…not definitions. Nationalism seems to be used more as extreme patriotism which is bad.
Bit it’d be nice if Apple and other big corps would be a bit more nationalistic when funneling profits made here through Ireland to dodge taxes.
Nationalism is good, so long as it doesn't become Isolationism. Putting "my country first" is fine, but don't let it become "only my country."

Nationalism is a great thing, its the concept that every society has a right to structure itself according to what its citizens want. Healthy nationalism respects the differences of your neighbors and doesn't try to intervene in or take over other countries. Trying to make all resources your own or to force the entire world to confirm to your own worldview is not a nationalistic belief, its a globalistic belief.
I don't believe in globalism since I think its inherently anti democratic to share policies with so many people that your own vote can never matter and your own way of life can not be preserved.
In all, I'd take globalism and its potential excesses to nationalism and its KNOWN destruction of marginalized folk.
@beefcakebradybatson nationalism isn't a danger to marginalized folk, it actually enhances marginalized folks ability to have a say. Good luck versus the entire world when your marginalized, you have far more chance on a regional level.
Really? Ten percent of Humankind is white, the other ninety percent black, brown, yellow or red. Other POC haven't acted upon talked about anti-Black genocide, so I'll take my chances with globalization.
@beefcakebradybatson What does any of that have to do with nationalism? If were going to point at faults in individual countries I can also point to the racial attacks against whites in South Africa that nobody wants to talk about. But here's the beauty of nationalism, stuff like that stays isolated to specific countries. Had that been a global policy you'd now have a global genocide.
The whole concept of having different nations with different governance and different rules enables people to leave countries that are hostile towards them and seek a new life in countries where they fit. Nationalism doesn't rule this out, but nationalists do want to ensure that the people coming in are indeed compatible with the nations culture and willing to become part of the society rather than merely life there and try to change it.
But your still not pointing out any flaws in the concept that having different nations is a good thing. Your bringing in things that have nothing to do with nationalism probably since you had bad sources conflate it all. Modern nationalism is just the concept that people are entitled to their own nation for their society with sovereignty over their own society, and that it is best to stick to your own borders. Its then up to each society to structure that in ways that works for them.
"Nationalism is an ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests."
In and of itself, it's little more than patriotism, but it can easy be manipulated. It can be used by demagogues to stir up support for invading other nations as those nations are inferior - see Mussolini. I may also lead to isolationism and protectionism which in thsi day and age is bad economics.
Nationalism + populism = fascism.
@Maybe_Maybe_not Russia invading Ukraine has nothing to do with sticking to your own borders.
I think nationalism is a way to celebrate how one tribe is strong, and most probably how another tribe is weak in comparison. A strength based on unverified assumptions, primitive instincts and general delusions promoted by states and cultures but, we need a way to define friends and foes, I get it, it's just that nationalism is really not the way I would use to define this.
Since we're talking about so called nation cultural purity and immigration, invoking History would be great, timeline maps:
Yes but not when it's to the exclusion of everything else or is used to justify bullying or violence. The problem with people who hide behind nationalism is they have a very narrow view of how the country should be.
It gives me the creeps to see people worshipping a country or race or to make it your whole identity. I think there's a difference between patriotism and nationalism, the latter just seems obsessive
Supporting your country and knowing it can be good is ok, but nationalism is cult mentality of blindly believing in politicians, government, and false histories, normally from grooming in schools forced to teach false history that glorifies the country and being forced to blindly pledge loyalty with no understanding of what it means.
If everybody is interested in taking care of their neighbors I think the world will be better. The most evil people, in my estimation, disguise their awful policies in terms of the "global good". It's not good for the people they're trying to help and it's not good for their fellows.
Nationalism:
"identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations."
... it's bad, but it's complicated.
Good. Without a strong collective nationalism I 100% guarantee you your country will be lost to migrants and another culture will replace yours.
It takes a long time, but it will happen.
Well, isn't European history a very long sequence of invasions from everywhere, minus Roman Empire days? A long sequence of cultural mix, no?
No country lasts long if it is not nationalist (I call it patriotic). The EU is going to hell.
In the right amount a dose of nationalism is good for a functioning country
I don't think it's necessarily bad. I mean there is nothing wrong with national pride if your country conducts itself in a manner that is worthy of that pride.
Sometimes yes, if it's to rid a nation of colonialism. Much more often, nationalism is used to "other" minorities of all stripes
Patriotism is good. Nationalism is an extreme and bad
You need nationalism to a certain degree.
Absolutely. It is expansionism that is bad.
Yes, in moderation.
