Why is it so wrong to take the law into your own hands?

My theory/pov -- which I'm not saying everyone in the past (or now) would agree with but: Probably because if everybody did whatever they thought was best there's the tendency for some people to misuse that power. When you do something for a selfish reason it tends to be bad in terms of society. If I kill my neighbor because I want his land, that's bad. If I kill my neighbor because he raped my family member or threatened to kill my family, that's not bad because actually what I did doesn't just help my family but helps society in general as someone who was a danger to more people than my own family has been eliminated. Nobody in the Old West days would give a crap if you terminated someone who was seen as dangerous to society. Even if they put you on trial you would get released because common sense said you didn't do anything actually wrong.
From a biblical pov you are not supposed to take vengeance. But (again) the loop hole would be if what you do actually helps society/other people because then it's not really about you.
There was a case a few years back of a dad who had his two young sons pushing his dead car down a road. A drunk driver crashed into the kids killing them both. Dad walked a short distance home & got a gun. Then he executed the drunk. Dad was found not guilty of murder. Many believe that the first cop on the scene helped hide the gun (which was never found). If so that cop was just being true to the real purpose of laws, if you ask me.
I think the further back in time you go the more people understood why laws existed and today not only are people uncertain but it's been perverted to where politicians and well connected members of the legal system abuse the system to create bad laws and use them against people who shouldn't be targeted.
When the government doesn't protect people then people will protect themselves. As western governments get softer on violent crime, more and more people will stop caring about social traditions and laws where you have 100s of laws and only law abiding people are held accountable by the authorities while lots of violent criminals get a slap on the wrist and no real punishment.
Psychology, someone you murder as payback for their murder is not a Counter-Strike 2 frag, it is real, it will have a consequential impact on your internal psychology, unless you're severely lacking in the empathy department, which creates another problem anyway.
Ethics, Justice must be an entity independent from parties involved in the crime, to increase impartiality, in order to reach fair treatment.

It's against the law so that it keeps the peace. Imagine if everyone was always getting revenge for shit, it would be chaos. Plus revenge will not bring back your loved one. They will still be dead, you will still be sad and you may even regret killing the person. Since killing is a very fucked up thing to do, that you would probably keep getting flash backs about, killing really isn't for the weak of heart. That is why I have to believe in god and just because they got away with it now does not mean god will not hand them their due judgment later.
If someone kills my loved one for no good reason, then I should be allowed to kill them. Their loved ones should not be allowed to retaliate because the killing was unjust in the first place. After I kill the murderer, the chain of hatred should end and justice is served. There's no chaos involved. I don't get why that concept is hard for people to understand.
Yeah but if say that guys kid sees it as his dad paid the time for the crime and you just killed him and he holds a grudge and kills you, its the same thing. Just because you say the hate should end, doesn't mean it will.
@HawkPerception
"I don't get why that concept is hard for people to understand"
It's expected, for people born 2000 years after the beginning of philosophical discussions, about ethics, morality and justice, to end up wondering about already answered questions.
That is supposed to humble them though.
This is where a good relationship with God comes in. I don’t want to hear about the vengeful things that he may have done to teach his people a lesson but in general i try to leave it in Gods hands. I’ll make petty remarks here and there but I’m not going to act on it and do anything stupid and jeopardize my life for someone who's no longer alive. Its a sad situation but i’d continue to live for the things they didn't get to. I’d seek better, legal and less violent ways to get justice for them
So let's say you're stranded on an uninhabited island with just you, your partner and another person. They kill your partner. You'll just leave it in God's hands?
@DizzyDesii we can do stupid things and it is human to but we will pay the price indeed. One can decide to kill and be justified and pay the price in a court of law under life time sentences but it's a beautiful thing if we aren't impulsive and we need to pray to God that he gives us wisdom and help us to not fall into temptations cause it's hard out here sis 😭😭
@HawkPerception
God said THOU SHALL NOT KILL. He never said i can't whoop they ass. Bt im not dumb enough to beat someone to death especially over some dick that can eventually be replaced
@luvstoned4him yea i won't be tryna kill anyone
@DizzyDesii so your partner would be some dick that can eventually be replaced?
As bad as it sounds, yes. I do want love and i want a longterm relationship, possibly marriage. But i will only ever love God and my future child unconditionally. I will love a guy even with all his flaws and so on. But if he dies, my life does not end when his does. I would probably eventually date again. So yea… dick that can be replaced.

I've seen that done, and was remarkable to be a part of it. It worked out ok but could have gone bad quickly. Reality is, sometimes it seems necessary because the police do not value your issue as much as you do.
These days, I wouldn't want to see it tried again. There's a reason even the police do not engage obvious crime situations... there is a lack of respect for law and right/wrong.
But it raises risks of escallation and risks to others, so it's better to "outsource" your issue to a competent 3rd party... police or investigators.
If the law isn't doing justice and not doing their job, then I believe you should take the law into your own hands.
Of course you will have to suffer the consequences for your actions, but sometimes revenge is sweet!
Agreed!
Because at least in America the law assumes they're innocent until proven guilty and the court is supposed to implement the punishment they see fit for the crime. It's basically about maintaining law and order within society.
Assume you saw the person kill your loved one. And then they go to jail for 5 years and they're out while your loved one is dead.
Well I always said if someone hurts (kills or rapes) someone very close to me, they're dead. But it has to be someone really close, only an immediate family member or partner. Those types of crimes usually have shorter sentences but I still understand that the law would have to pass judgement.
Personally I don't judge people under those circumstances, if they really are 100% sure that the person is the culprit.
I love that movie. And if anyone killed my children or even touch them then I would for sure be taking the law into my own hands. I honestly don't do revenge but for my kiddos all bets are off.
You and me both, only I would do it for any of my closest loved ones
In the olden days you would have... and that's why we have so many wars and feuding families/"gangs". It's important to let the established laws to take over so that innocent people aren't continually harmed.
Because the government, in its infinite autism, decided that only trained policemen should be arresting people and possessing the nonce case list. So your friendly neighbourhood unethical entrepreneur has to stick of other means of making a living.
Simples...
God says "vengeance is mine"
Or if you don't believe in God Karma will get them
But another common sense reason would be so that you don't end up in jail
I get that's it's human and the most rationale idea and impulse would be to kill them but then spending the rest of your life in jail?
And why is it right that you go to jail for killing someone that killed your loved one for no good reason
@HawkPerception not about right. You will be held accountable in a court of law and given some years sentencing but morally it would be considered right as per our beliefs. So who can really say who is wrong in this case? Only God can judge us..
It’s called crime of passion most people get off like for example somebody killed one of your loved ones right in front of you and you killed them back instantly. That’s a crime of passion.
In my opinion, the law IS revenge.
But if the law fails, then I don't see a moral issue with taking some steps yourself.
I couldve respected movies like SAW if people got sliced here and there and only lost a limb as punishment but they were going too far killing people
@DizzyDesii I never saw any of those movies.
The only time I would do something like that would be in self defense at the time.
We are a nation of laws. There is a process that has to be followed because taking the law into your own hands is vengeance and not justice.
Because we live under the powers of State and laws regulate what we can and can't do, that's why. Our acts lead to consequences, so if you take the law into your onw hands, someone would think that they have the same right, and then you'd be under some serious threat, got it? I know that it's easier said than done, I know that any of us would do terrible things in order to protect our beloved ones, but that's how things work.

Ask him.
Well, I always decapitate and mutilate those that wrong me as the law doesn't do what it is supposed to ! ? 🤷♂️😂😂😂😂😂
My father was a bomber pilot during WWII. He had a 5 Franc coin that was his good luck piece. It was stolen from me. I tried to get it back. I did not get it back. Within 2 years the thief died in a traffic accident. I don’t do revenge.
It wouldn't be a law but a transaction. A fair and even trade.
Because that leads to the persecution of the innocent.
Innocent until proven guilty means they have rights.
We can't take the law into our own hands. Then it's law of the jungle.
