There is homeless epidemics. Epidemics means in a recognized area. So California and historically New York city would be homeless epidemics. Pandemics is globally like covid19. Monkey pox right now in Africa is an epidemic.

What to do about it. Lot of it has to do to local city politics and zoning what kind of housing can be built. Some zoning laws are absolutely batshit insane. Like every resident needs to be able to see the capital building of the state when in reality you want to build super high rises with giant capacity for families to grow a family. Then theirs older drag racing tracks half hour out of town where the noise won't bother anyone but the city grows into being next door to a race track amd everyone is in a bad situation.

Shit like this and everything inbetween is why housing prices and homelessness is an epidemic. Reality is we can't have that post ww2 picket white fence dream. It work with the invention of the A/C growing into the desert area with the hoover dam. But We gotta figure out what works in the modern era.

Calling it a homeless "epidemic" is misleading. An epidemic is "a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time." This suggests a disease which can only be control by the active and aggressive intervention of the government, and it also suggests that those afflicted bear no responsibility for being afflicted with the disease. I reject the premise of the question and homelessness is not a disease.

@elaphe Understand. In Florida, before approx. 1970, chronically mentally ill people were confined in state hospitals. They had three meals every day, a warm, dry place to sleep, and basic medical care. Then, people with a liberal leaning decided that it was inhumane to keep them confined in hospitals if they were not presently dangerous; it was an insult to their dignoty as individuals, so they were discharged. They were sent to community facilities where they were not confined and could leave whenever they chose. Because of their illness, or for other reasons, they left, and now they live under bridges, exposed to extremes of heat and cold, rain, and scrambling to find food. But they have their "dignity."

If truth be told there is a homeless epidemic & unfortunately veterans, elderly & average citizens are losing their homes & people that are not citizens are getting free shit, healthcare, housing & food. The epidemic is real.

I mean homeless don’t have a car and can’t go from interview & interview with ease, probably don’t have credentials also no access to a shower/deodorant also clean clothes which makes them less likely to even be hired, etc.
Homeless people sadly can’t climb the economic ladder, it is easy to fall into debt than it is to get out of it without some support.
