Unions formed the American middle class, and with their near elimination ( thanks, Ronnie Ray-Guns, who destroyed PATCO in 1982 and fired the criminally overworked, underpaid air traffic controllers, thus beginning the relentless war on workers which has only amplified through the years;I believe only about one in twelve U. S. private sector toilers are unionized as opposed to over one-third or some such figure three generations ago), wages for blue-collar men have stagnated (perhaps regressed) in real terms, i. e., relative to inflation since the early seventies, hence the immoral "gig economy" where workers sell their labour as benefits-lacking contracts, sometimes to as many as three companies, who can terminate them "at will." Without unions, the blue-collar (and more than a few white-collar) labour force is now the "precariat," where even working multiple jobs is no guarantee of even close to a decent, moral living.
Should public employees be allowed to organize? Anyone should be allowed to organize. They should also be allowed to be fired for striking. And employers should be allowed to actively oppose the unions.
Should unions have seats on corporate boards? In theory yes. In practice no. But whoever is on the board, they need to understand labor.

Are union dues a form of theft? No. Nobody is forced to join a union, not even in states that don't have right to work laws.
Do unions perform any other laudable functions? Some skilled trade unions still have excellent training programs.

If by personal story you mean something that affected me personally, no.
However I grew up and spent most of my life in a union town, especially automotive union. I'm also old enough to remember when many of the unions had gotten totally out of hand. I remember them being a major factor in destroying a sizable portion of the heavy industry in the US, and sending it overseas.
I remember when "Made in Japan" was a common phrase that meant it was cheap garbage. But, largely because of the unions, people began to realize that American cars were the ones that were garbage, and Japanese cars were a lot more reliable.
If you can't get fired, you can get by doing totally crappy work. And that's exactly what happened. And those mother fuckers would smash Japanese cars just because they were Japanese. They were too fucking stupid to realize that THEY were the cause. Or they'd smash cars or slash tires just because someone was non-union. That's not just rumor. I know people it's happened to.
I remember when the Teamsters were flexing their muscles (I think in the 70s). There were people along the interstate with rifles shooting at non-union truckers. Like wtf? Some stretches of the Interstate had actually become dangerous for non-union drivers.
I have worked briefly with Teamsters before. Every single on of those mother fuckers should have been fired. But of course the union wouldn't allow it.

Unions in the United States preform apprentice & skills training in a lot of different industries especially construction.
Unions provide legal protection for things such as wrongful dismissal or injury at work. Along with training sometimes life insurance, advice and job opportunities.
Collective bargaining helps but then companies are free to use non union labour that will accept below the going rate. Higher wages are good but if companies can say bring in ilegal foreign workers for half the price they will.

Just because a union supposedly holds elections among the workers does not mean they represent all of them. Nor does it mean without them the workers had no vote at all as everyone of them had the vote to take the job and to leave it at any time.
Instead we have a mob of workers attempting to hijack the property of the indiviual who employs them at the expense of that indiviual and every other workers who didn't support that particular mob's goals.
Instead they just insist that we all agree with the Mob's demands. When not only clearly we didn't vote for it, but we would not have consented to the destabilizing power the mob's abolition of property rights.
Unions have their place, but they sometimes have too much political influence and can work against the public interest.
I worked with a guy who used to work a union job and they had to make their quota of 38 widgets a day (OK I forget what it was he actually made) and then... stop. They couldn't make 39, as the union wouldn't allow that. They couldn't go home - they had to work their fixed hours. I guess they were supposed to just clean up their workspace or something if they finished early. It sounded pretty ridiculous to me.
I've seen that too. The work rules exist for one reason: preservation of most jobs possible and I've seen some RIDICULOUS work rules that are for "safety" and it's a crock of shit. Building codes too. Exist just to enrich contractors!
I have read about several American companies that are denying their workers the right to sit! Which was fought for by unions 100 years ago. They even removed chairs from the break rooms. It’s unbelievable what American style capitalism makes possible. Unions are needed more than ever.

Why? I've had colleagues defend their curriculum as academic freedom under our tenure rules. I've never known a teacher to lose tbh when parents challenged it. The school board (who approve the curriculum) was always in favor of it and told parents to STFU and have a seat.
Because when you become more difficult to fire, why bother actually trying? What is stopping people from just screwing around?
Can you imagine how much better quality everything will be if everyone will always be concerned about being fired for incompetency? Especially when you consider how awful a lot of the schools are in the inner city.
