I believe sex work is slightly controversial in the US still unfortunately. We have a long way to go as Americans.

It is controversial for different reasons. It is hard not to think of it as anything other than a trap - to young nubile women it would largely appear as easy money to do something they more or less enjoy anyway. But the realities of servicing men who are necissarily coming with a bruised ego or something to hide - wanting to believe their meager payment is not important because the sex is rewarding on its own and prone to hostility when she doesn't go along with that fantasy - are rarely like the pleasant stardom women envisioned every time they were told they were "pretty" growing up. It takes a certian sort of personality to navigate that and it is not the same personality that wants easy money. It is work. Possibly some of the hardest work there is. So by doing it a woman has a lot less time to get trained in any other sort of work, thus when she reaches 30 or so and can no longer sell herself reliably, what then?
This I think is a valid source of controversy: the odds of regret are too great and too hard to explain to young women, at least as far as I'm aware. Not to mention the other side of this coin: if prostitution were legal and a really hot girl wanted to be an astronaut or something, there is too great a risk people (men and women) would try to push her into becoming a prostitute, believing she would have an easier life if she did, and freeing up her seat in class for someone who doesn't have the option to be a prostitute.
Maybe if prostitution was limited to 10 hours per week before the age of 30 or something? That might mitigate a lot of this..
