Why is it that in this day and age being racist is seen as the worst thing that anybody could be?

I don't know honestly, that would be interesting study, because it's crazy to think that only 60 years ago racism was mainstream in the U. S. and 30 years ago in Africa. Which if you think about it, is actually not very long. Bill Burr said that White women have stood by us toxic White males through centuries of our crime against humanity, and occasionally if they wanted to go sneak off with a black dude, they said it wasn't consensual. So I do often wonder what aspects lead to our culture changing so much.

Racism is a bad thing, perhaps the worst thing, both for the person who does it and for the person who is done to it. If you are racist towards someone who is not like you, you will pay the price. This is the rule of life. If you bully someone when they are weak, that person will become stronger and finish you off.
