There's no simple answer to the question. It depends on each situation and location. A trained sharpshooter can shoot very accurately from 500 yards, while an average hunter can probably shoot accurately from around 150 yards.

As the US has learned in the past as have other countries, there is no way to 100% prevent an assassination attempt. It's about managing risk, not prevention. That's not what the public wants to hear, but it's the true facts.

Realistically the best way to keep the president secure is for him to communicate remotely and never show up in public.

That's not how Trump does things though so there will always be risk. You can only make even just 100 yards so safe if you allow people to roam around.

The vigilance of the secret service does need some work but at least this time the shooter didn't get a shot close to Trump compared to the other one.
