The "I am better than you at everything in every way" coworker. Can anyone relate?

So I've been working as an editor at a renowned news agency in my country for over a year now. I get along with everyone well and nobody seems to have a personal grudge against me, or any problem either.

Except this one guy.

We both joined around the same time last year, but due to his non-serious attitude, average performance and immature work ethic, I was picked as the better editor and promoted to head of the department.

Now I should mention that this guy has always been a jokester and a clown, but other than that, he's also a sore loser and someone who takes someone else being better than him as a personal attack to himself, and instead of improving on himself, he starts treating the other person like crap.

I can easily counter his cheesy one liners and half assed comebacks with ease and laugh it off, while making him fumble on what to say next, but the fact remains that the guy has no filter and will almost always make it his job to ruin my day when he can. And even though some people see it as a funny little back and forth between us (even though I don't engage unless provoked), it's starting to get old now.

Does anyone else know someone like this in their workplace? And if so, how do you deal with them? Let's talk!
