Why do city people think that they are better than you if you have a southern accent?

Cuz we are? No seriously with radios and then TV the networks had to find a voice that would appeal to all Americans which eliminated southern drawls because they were already very distinctive and with the low population of the south it never had a chance to appeal to a mass audience. Rural people in the 20s to 50s flocked to cities where their accents marked them as hicks, bumpkins and new arrivals leading to them to shed their accents FAST. Radio / tv reinforced this view and there you go. No southerners on air

For the same reason city folks aren't accustomed to country rural folk ways - likewise they'll be a stigma that you're not street smarts familiar with city folks ways - each are their own scary wild jungles - concrete or fields - just saying 😉
