Do the people who volunteer to protect us deserve our respect?

I am talking very specifically about people like soldiers and police officers and firefighters, all of whom volunteer to protect us from things that can threaten our lives and the lives of our families. I often think that these individuals do not receive the respect that they deserve from us. I recognize that sometimes they do things that are inappropriate but we all do. That should not mean that they are not also deserving of respect and gratitude.

Not in all cases, NO. I am from a "small' city, in Ohio, and as a kid (21) was beaten in the back seat of police car with three (3) other of these "public servants looking straight ahead. My crime? Blowing my horn in a drive through restaurant, and then slamming the 'serving tray back when the "cop" told me to leave....

After being punched in the face and solar plexus, I went to the local police station, and filed a complaint, after which my 'assailant' came walking through, on the way to his being questioned, looking at me with contempt.

I found out later that this was one of MANY complaints filed against this 'dirty' cop, and that his brother had KILLED a man in the 'drunk tank' by hitting him with a sapper glove, and the man fracturing his skull on the floor, when he fell. The man was black! (Surprise, surprise)

Then end result? This scum bag excuse of a 'public servant' was taken off of the street and put on a "bad Check" desk... This coming from a Lieutenant friend of mine on the Akron Police department

Oddly phrased, as there are too many cases where this isn't volunteering at all, but a profession instead. In my philosophy, culture of volunteerism is highly respectable. If it's a profession then it's not really the same thing I am looking at. Besides, in my experience, there is a clear difference between the ideals and the individuals.

Though I once laughed with a cop rummaging my backpack. I had a dozen of books inside. As he proceeded, he told me: "Eh don't throw the books at us, okay?" 🙃

One chooses to enter into a profession and to keep doing it, so it is voluntary.

Different meanings, I spoke from the meaning of volunteering, as in free labor, that is the context I used

Yes of course they do. Or maybe rephrase that to the profession should be respected as individuals within those professions may still undeserving of respect but that should be separate (I'm addressing those that will argue about racist cops or violent abusive soldiers).

There is a lot of professions tho that equally deserve respect. Any that help people or saves lives. That can be from doctors, nurses and carers. To scientist in labs looking for cures or inventing machines that save lives.

But what about farmers and agriculture that keep our food supply? Water company workers keeping clean water flowing...

Lol it's probably easier to say who doesn't deserve respect... the selfish environment destroying or people hurting for profit professions..

Absolutely a good amount on firefighters are volunteer and die in those accidents

My best friend is a police officer and I hear personally what she goes through each and everyday. It's not an easy job at all. One of the hardest ones in fact and they are laying down their lives to protect us and often have to make hard decisions fast. So yes, they certainly deserve our respect and admiration for what they do.

Yes, I used to sell equipment and uniforms to cops and firefighters. I literally knew hundreds of them. I would say that 99% of them were committed to serving their communities., The other 1% probably should have never been hired.

Most people have a natural instinct to protect friends and family but they go further, protecting people they don't know, perhaps don't even like. So yes I think they deserve respect.

That is a mater of semantics and it is not the point - nobody forces them to do what they do.

True, they chose those jobs which is heroic and requires a lot of selflessness and determination. So we should respect their selflessness act.
