It’s seems like a pretty broken system if the person fewer people voted for can in any way be declared the winner.

One of the biggest problems in American government is people’s irrational reverence to The Constitution, and a complete refusal to make any common sense alterations to it, since OBVIOUSLY a document written in the 1700s is going to be almost completely useless a quarter-millenium later.

And this has been the quarter-millenium of the most advancement in human history, so the uselessness is exacerbated. The difference between 1800 and 2050 is going to be ASTRONOMICAL, much more different than 1800 was relative to 1550.

So we need to radically accept that, with all due respect to the original concept, it doesn’t need to be crumpled up and thrown in the trash, but it needs SERIOUS tinkering for the modern era, just remaining generally true to the original spirit of the idea, in good faith.

No as the electoral college isn't voting based on race or gender, but voting based on how the majority of the people in the state they represent voted. Many people think the electoral college was created because of slavery, which isn't accurate, it was created to prevent mob rule. When I was a little younger I use to support getting rid of the electoral college, but now that I'm older and wiser, I realize the true purpose of the electoral, and that is to prevent mob rule and to ensure every state has a say in electing the President and not just a hand full of densely populated cities.

What led to the creation of the electoral college was known as "The Great Compromise", which tried to satisfy the wants of the representatives from smaller states and the larger states with one neat plan. Slave states did take advantage of the electoral college, but that is not the sole reason it exist. Without the electoral college, you'd have a few densely populated cities deciding presidential elections, which is mob role the electoral college prevents.

And you're downplaying the role the slave states played in the electoral college. You said the "big states." The only small slave states were Del and MD. VA, GA, SC, NC were all bigger states that had lots of slaves they wanted counted for apportionment - congressional seats AND electoral colelge - they go hand-in-hand.

Maybe. The UK Reform party ended up with 6 seats in parliament despite getting 15% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats got 72 seats with just 12% of the vote.

Labour got 33% of the vote and got 411 seats, the Conservatives got 23% of the vote and got 121 seats.

In short there is something very wrong with the UK voting system or else their is massive fraud going on.

Your state can cast its electors anyway it choose, by legislator election as it did originality, by congressional district as Nebraska does currently, by first past the post voting as most of the states do now.

This effectively makes all elections If your narrow minded or dumb enough to keep living that way in that area, then only someone who wanted you dead would keep giving you money to make it possible.

This flexibility effectively makes all elections a State election giving you in theory compete freedom to experiment in alternative electoral schemes for all elections without effecting other states.

That means your state can do vote by mail, implement proportional representation, instant run offs, novel election rules, etc...

The electoral cottage doesn't even decide the relative value of each state.

It doesn't force us to under or over value any state. All states are equal regardless of their population size, a fact reflected in the original system, the current Senate and how presidents are elected without the collage.
