It's necessary. Years ago, I worked for a state agency. We were unionized and for some reason we were under the same contract as another very different state agency. Their needs were very different than ours. Because there were way more of them than there were of us, the contract was always geared toward their needs. It didn't matter how we voted, they always got what they needed and we always got screwed. This is an example of a union not working for It's members. It's also an example of how things would be without the electoral college. Heavily populated states would decide for everyone. California and South Dakota don't have the same needs. It's also a great example of why more power should be with the states and not the federal government. That way, California could do what works for them, and South Dakota could do the same.
So basically you don’t believe in democracy? Weird.
@Hannajenky Democracy is mob rule.
lol your head is so far up your ass your neck is brown.
@Hannajenky
"Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”
—John Adams
@Hannajenky that's rich coming from you. Another lefty who can't tolerate anyone who can independently think. Be honest, on a scale of one to dead sea, juat how salty are you that you can't force everyone to be just like you?
I’m just thankful you weirdos are being swept into the dustbin of history where everyone is laughing at you
@Hannajenky
Lol
Democrats always cheat however just like how they I steered Kamala without any votes and now pay people to apply on Craigslist to be part of the crowd that supports the incoherent black Indian that just repeats the same over practiced sentence what can be unburdened by what has been followed by hysterical laughter to when she has no clue how to answer a question. Absurd.
The US is a nation of states. The Electoral College was created to endure that every state, regardless of size, has a say in who is elected Presudent. That applies even more today. Without it, the election would be decided by a handful of states.
If you think about it, parliamentary governments have essentially the same system in selecting a Prime Minister. Each MP (district) gets a vote; the PM is not selected by popular vote.
Say you don’t believe in democracy without saying you don’t believe in democracy. Weird.
@Hannajenky It would be great if you understood what he said, Braindead does not count as an excuse! OH, you are a member of the DEMOCRATIC COMMUNIST PARTY OF AMERICA!
@Hannajenky Let's look at the 2016 election, where Hillary Clinton had 3 million more popular votes than Donald Trump. Those 3 million votes all came from California and the Island of Manhattan; the entire rest of the country was essentially a tie in the popular vote. Would that be democracy to give Hillary the win because those two areas voted for her? The Electoral Vote considered the entire country, not two Democratic strongholds.
If democracy is one person one vote.
You are saying you are against democracy and American values.
You are a disgrace to your country and unpatriotic. You have no morals and on top of that you are ignorant and weird as fuck
today, only 7 swing states matter.
@Hannajenky The Electoral College ensures that all of those people in small states, every single one of them, that their vote counts. Without the Electoral College, their vote is meaningless.
if you live in reliably red or blue state today, your vote is taken for granted.
Only seven states are swing states, and the candidates will spend the vast majority of their time and money there.
You live in Idaho, you won't see a candidate. You live in Massachussets, short of a fund-raiser, you won't see a candidate. Same for TX, CA, OR, WA, HA, AK, AR, OK, LA, MS, AL, NE, KA, KT...
I strongly believe in the electoral system, for multiple reasons. I have posted about this so many time that' I'm blue in the face. People who are against it just don't get it. They just don't understand that a representative government is not mob rule.. The electoral college means that everyone has a say, not just the people who happen to be in the majority.

It's always confused me honestly, especially Maine. And I never even know how to explain it to my foreign friends honestly. It doesn't seem fair to me though, because you can lose the popular vote and still become president. I don't understand why we don't elect by popular vote
It's a slavery origin anachronism inserted as a last minute thought to make sure elites actually do the voting and prevent the mob takeover. It's inherently unequal and violates the 14th amendment and numerous SCOTUS decisions; if it wasn't actually in the constitution it would be void. It's our own little suicide pact.
The electoral college is flawed, but it's a lot better than doing away with it. The last two times a GOP candidate won the popular vote was 2004 abd 1986. Gore got mote votes than Bush and Clinton got more votes than Trump. So if we did away with it Darth Orange wouldn't be as much of a nuisance as he is now.
Keeps the checks and balances for states citizens. Imagine if we lived under the tyranny of new York and california doing what's best solely for themselves
I think you mean “imagine if we actually lived in a democracy”
@Hannajenky we live in a democracy. Each state is a member of the union that is the United States and each State has rights. If this wasn't the case bills would only be passed for the benefit of new York and california with the rest of the States being exploited.
I find it the hardest political system to make sense of in the world. I mean, it's not a place, yet neither is it a thing - it's very odd. It's sort of like, why "can't" the Americans just popularly select their president
It never made sense to me. It's not fair for the vote of some states to be more important than the others
It's based off population
@KostasKouvalis I know, but doesn't it make more sense to just go by the whole country's majority vote all together like in other countries?
There could be a majority vote in a close election with different results in the electoral college and in the end the states with more population are the ones that decide for the others. It doesn't make sense for them to say "every vote counts/can make a difference" then
Yes, it does
It is the only thing that prevents this country to having representation only at the two coasts.
I had no idea what it was and why it's even called a college still evades and puzzles me and, I hated it until someone finally explained it to me.
College was like the colleagues idea.
Republicans have lost the popular vote 7 of the last 8 elections so they need this 18th century math to help them. It's the only way they can win so they will make sure it stays.
Which is funny because they are always yelling and screaming about the election being rigged, but basically they are the ones rigging the election in their favor. The electoral college was based on a slavery compromise that is no longer relavant or needed.
Republicans have no morals, nor do they have any priinciples other than the desire to hurt other people to make them as miserable as they are.
But can one state with many people decide for the Other 50?
It's not one state deciding anything. Each person's vote counts equally wherever they live in America.
It's not a perfect system, but it not only allows small states to have a say in who is elected president, but it forces candidates to campaign in states they wouldn't normally campaign in.
Say you don’t believe in democracy without saying you don’t believe in democracy. Weird.
The idiot you are conversing with does not have a clue of what you are talking about. I would suggest to him/ her that they read about the Electoral College and why it exists. But I don't think that he or she knows how to read since he or she does not know the difference between a Republic and a Democracy.
I hate it.
Popular vote doesn’t matter…. Only stupid red states and stupid blue states on a map.
For decades now or more people believe the electoral college should be abolished and that the true winner of a US presidential election should be determined by the popular vote only
Has its faults, but it's a decent attempt at fairness.
I think is trash. You win or lose by popular vote of the nation, not a select few states to determine the outcome of an election.
Totally antiquated. Perhaps a follow-up question could be... Are there any MAGA voters who believe the Electoral College should be gotten rid of?
No, because they like to try to rig the election while accusing democrats of doing it
Falls directly in line with the educational system. Red states are mostly toward the bottom.
It sucks because it's a slavery compromise holdover.
It works well to keep California and New York from dictating the election.
You don’t believe in democracy
@exitseven explained it well, i agree.
It's a good system.
So you don’t believe in democracy
@Hannajenky I believe in a representative republic. Which is what the Untied States is. "democracy" in its purest form is tyranny of the majority.
It's stupid as fuck
