The uncomfortable truth is that just about any idiot can sire/birth a child, leaving us with the result of “most parents are idiots”, as most humans are just kinda dumb, as a standard. By way of that same logic: many teachers and administrators can be idiots too, but at least I feel like they’re TRAINED idiots.
The things is, when I hear these school board meeting complaints…. its never seeming to come from the best and brightest people. It’s usually not a thermodynamic engineer or a neurosurgeon yelling at the PTA meeting, lmfao. It’s usually some average (to be charitable) person with some primitive, uneducated belief system that they wrongly want to train their kids to believe in too. And they can’t have some fancy liberal from the city, with their book-learnin’, coming in and teaching kids that their parents are actually shitty people, objectively unfit to parent, if we were more controlling about that.
Like it’s never about anything good or legitimate, they just want whitewashed American History taught, or these are homophobic morons who think kids LEARN to be gay simply by knowing the concept exists, or crazy holy rollers, whose entire fabricated worldview THEY’RE trying to brainwash their kid with, would fall apart if their kids made the horrific discovery of the existence of dinosaurs, lmfao. These are NOT our best and brightest people🤦♂️😂
So…. I think it’s important as a nation and a society to be pulling the cart in the same direction, informationally and in our social views and practices. And from what I’ve seen, the school board usually isn’t the one in the wrong, it’s some weirdo like the aforementioned folks I described trying to shield children from harmless, or at least NECESSARY, information to navigate life and society with. And with this unfortunate and very dangerous new culture where people conceptually believe in “fake news”, we need it more than ever. Children need to be protected, and often the most dangerous influences in their life are their own parents and family.

The government should set a national curriculum. With a focus on the basics of the 3 Rs, maths and science. History, geography, religion and PE should also be taught and at least one language. A lot of the other stuff like home economics, pastrol care, gender studies and stop trying to add stuff.
To be honest these days most schools are really just a babysitting service so both parents can work and contribute to the tax base. Parents should take more intrest in their kid's education ensuring they learn what they should.
I got pulled out of secondary school in the first year and homeschooled because my school was failing, had a massive bullying problem and a few of the girl's had been groomed for the grooming gangs. One girl was bullied so bad she hung herself. Gang culture was rife and the boys were always getting stabbed after school. I did real well out of homeschooling and to be honest I had a lot more free time and was able to skip years. Through the open university I did half my GCSES when I was 14 and the rest when I was 15and had my A levels done by 16. Had done 2 betecs and an NVQ at the local technical college by 17 and by 20 had a basic college degree.
A child isn't the life time property of the parents. It has to be equipped with skills that will ensure a successful life long after they move out the family home.
The most important skill you can teach a child is how to learn, that's what allows it to adapt to the future. Parents tend to have a narrow view of what kids should learn based in their experience 20 years ago. When have you ever had to do long division in your head or impress an employer with neat hand writing?
One of the best bit of advice I got as a school girl is employers don't care what your knowledge of history, geography, etc is what they care about is the fact you put the effort in and got the grades, it shows you can learn something within a time frame to a certain level. If you can't be arsed to do that then it's a waste of time trying to train you.
@Avicenna respectfully disagree. Their criteria for evaluating is old, they are jaded, their skills for forecasting are shitty and their identity is wrapped up in the advice they provide. It's hopelessly biased and likely not the best source.
And public school bureaucracies are cutting edge and unbiased? When‘s the last time most of them were teachers or thought about anything butchers scores? So you know better than that.

Agreed on that part. Schools are at a minimum 20-30 years behind in tech, pedagogy best practices, efficiency, etc. I hated how sclerotic they are and fought tirelessly against it when teaching. We had textbooks where dozens of nations no longer even existed it were created to go with the pull down maps that were pre Berlin wall coming down.

Occasionally unfortunate kids gets raised by toxic parents. But that’s usually not the case. While no parent is perfect most of them would DIE for their kids if it really came down to it. Would the government do the same?
But destroying the family and letting the government take over is a long time communist strategy. It was implemented both in the late Soviet Union, Cuba and China. And it’s heinous. It’s about brainwashing young and malleable minds for an agenda.
I think parents should certainly be involved, but the problem is you can't get some parents to a parent-teacher conference or to even respond to an e-mail. Also, how many parents know enough about literature, math, science, history, etc. to develop curricula? It's annoying enough when politicians do it.

Absolutely! In my field of biology, there are parents who would oppose teaching evolution. After the last pandemic, I was reminded how scientifically illiterate people can be. I saw a man on TV at a school board meeting who actually compared his daughter being made to wear a mask at school to her being raped. I would much rather wear fabric over my mouth and nose than be raped!
Parents are in charge of their kids, period. Kids are not communal property and I hate it whenever people say that kids belong to the community
Parents can simply homeschool their kids if they don't like the schools though and it's not like the exams the kids need to pass are all that complicated. Thank fuck for homeschooling. I wish I was home school because the people I went to school with were fucking animals.
Totally disagree. The community has a STAKE not a CLAIM of the outcome of my kids. We all do. The fact is there are multiple "end users" of the "product" schools provide.
I’ve never encountered a single administrator who cared about the product they delivered in terms of what anyone outside of the bureaucracy thought. And lots of teachers also don’t.
Parents should be involved in proposing and approving curriculums for their children, with teachers and BoE members (who are trained in educational concepts, as well as exposed to new concepts) should be the main ones proposing, monitoring and maintaining curriculums.

Teachers - they only ones with any education usually. Parents usually don't, and BOE people are politicians. There should be exceptions for people with relevant college educations I suppose.
None of the above. I would like to be able to say teachers but because of public education that just means state again and the state has a self serving interest in selective/false education.

The govt needs to stay the hell OUT of education. Abolish the Dept Of Education.
Mainly parents and the Christian church, at the LOCAL level should be deciding curriculum
Public schools have been corrupted turned into indoctrination centers they have homosexual's dirty dancing in front of children at schools. Public schools should be done away with and the tax dollars should be to private schools.
The ones who suggest nonsense like CRT, allow children to be pushed forward when they've not made the academic cut, that allow porn in libraries, allow boys on girl's sports teams
