The Supreme Court added a special session late in the term to review a case involving President Donald Trump’s effort to ban automatic U. S. citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants and foreign visitors. Trump has asked the justices to lift or narrow three nationwide injunctions that have blocked his policy from taking effect while its legality is tested in court.

At oral argument May 15, the justices expressed concern about the proliferation of nationwide injunctions in general, but several appeared sympathetic to states challenging Trump’s executive order and open to a middle ground that would permit judges to issue universal orders in limited circumstances.

The Supreme Court is at the end of its term, with six final decisions expected Friday. The justices so far have allowed states to ban gender transition care for minors, lowered the standard for proving workplace discrimination for members of majority groups, and deadlocked on the legality of direct public funding for religious schools, among other issues.

Several major rulings will come on the last day, including whether to limit nationwide injunctions such as those blocking President Donald Trump’s ban on birthright citizenship, the legality of requiring age verification to access online porn, and whether parents can opt their children out of school lessons featuring books with LGBTQ+ themes.

While I doubt the author of the 14th's citizenship clause and it ratifiers intended to make citizens of children who are born to visiting foreigners or those who come and/or stay in violation of the laws, I do not see where the Constitution gives the authority to any POTUS to decide the issue. Seems like the issue is the domain of Congress and/or the courts, not the Executive.

It's in the Constitution. Changing it requires a constitutional amendment, not Trump's feelings.

It's under the Constitution, and it should be followed. Anyone living here, having been born here, has those protection rights.

It was designed so that black people could become citizens after slavery was repealed not to be a loophole so illegal aliens could have anchor babies and then get on welfare for the rest of their lives. I hope the Supreme Court does not decide to just kick this down the road.

@DrPepper12 Melania Trump was given an EB-1 visa. She applied for it in a legal manner and came into the US the legal way. Her visa never expired and she was never in a violation of US immigration laws. I imagine being a wealthy international model made it easier for her to get this done but that does not mean that she did anything that was illegal,

WASHINGTON — Melania Trump was paid for 10 modeling jobs in the United States worth $20,056 that occurred in the seven weeks before she had legal permission to work in the country, according to detailed accounting ledgers, contracts and related documents from 20 years ago provided to The Associated Press.

Mrs. Trump, who received a green card in March 2001 and became a U. S. citizen in 2006, has always maintained that she arrived in the country legally and never violated the terms of her immigration status. During the presidential campaign, she has cited her story to defend her husband’s hard line on immigration.

The wife of the GOP presidential nominee, who sometimes worked as a model under just her first name, has said through an attorney that she first came to the U. S. from Slovenia on Aug. 27, 1996, on a B1/B2 visitor visa and then obtained an H-1B work visa on Oct. 18, 1996.

The documents obtained by the AP show she was paid for 10 modeling assignments between Sept. 10 and Oct. 15, during a time when her visa allowed her generally to be in the U. S. and look for work but not perform paid work in the country. The documents examined by the AP indicate that the modeling assignments would have been outside the bounds of her visa.

Since questions arose earlier this year, Mrs. Trump has declined to publicly release her immigration records. Wildes, the immigration lawyer, released a letter in September that laid out the details of what he said Mrs. Trump’s immigration records show, including a seven-week window in which Mrs. Trump was in the U. S. before her work visa was issued.
