Why do people become politicians? To serve the people or to serve themselves/friends?

Some start because they are idealistic. But then they realize that their main job is to raise money for the party. And the more money they raise, the greater the perks. If they don't raise money, they don't get committee appointments, don't have any influence, don't get any legislation passed, and don't get reelected.

Some enter politics as a business. It's like being a very, very well paid car salesman with all kinds of perks.

How does an average person who is broke when they enter politics become a multi-millionaire after a few years in office?

They talk to lobbyists all day and get wined and dined.

It's all a racket.
