Would you support a tax on income from social media ads?

Swedish Minister of Education, Johan Pehrson, from the co-ruling Liberal Party, came up with an idea of introducing an excise tax on advertising revenues generated by social media on similar terms as for the sale of tobacco or alcohol, as social media are as harmful ar tobacco or alcohol" according to Pehrson.

According to the Liberal Party politician, such a tax could be around 10-15%, and the revenue from it should be allocated to protecting children and young people from the negative effects of algorithms used by internet platforms. These funds would also be to support psychiatric treatment of people already addicted.

"The impact of social media on the brain is documented. People almost become addicted to things that negatively affect their well-being. They are drawn into extreme things. Girls are fed with sick ideals of beauty," Pehrson explained his proposal.

A big problem at least in the United States is all of our advertising laws break down with the product being technically free. Showing one thing and the product is completely different.

Unless we do a complete overhaul and redefine what the internet is, any tax would fall through the cracks in like it is today.

I support removing taxes and fixing taxes at 10% for all the people who are native and 20% for people who are foreign.
And no exemptions except maybe an exemption of 100,000$ on total cumulative income

No, i think the government can provide education about the harm, but when they try to control our behavior, they have crossed the line. I understand that mentality is less common in Europe.

I think all transactions should be taxed and considering social media is contributing to the need for extra social services such as therapy I dont think its unreasonable to expect their taxes to cover those expenses at least in part.
