Would you cause a stranger to die to guarantee surviving Russian Roulette?

Would you knowingly press a button and cause a stranger to die if you gained $5,000 because of it?

In a dystopian future, you are convicted of a serious crime. Your punishment is playing Russian Roulette in front of a large physical audience of several hundred people.

In Russian Roulette, you put a single bullet in a revolver, spin the cylinder, place the muzzle against your head and pull the trigger. If the loaded chamber fires, you die. If it doesn't, you go free.

In this dystopian world, you have an option. You can choose not to play Russian Roulette. Instead, you can press a button and one random member of the audience will die.

One more thing. Your punishment requires that your family and friends witness your punishment, so they are among the hundreds of people in the audience.

Do you press the button, or try your luck with the gun?

The question is would you're friends and family forgive you for risking their lives or worse still if it went wrong. You've a 17% chance of dying which is pretty low. Then again is it really 1 in 6 when you consider the weight of the bullet? Or is it really 50/50, you die or you don't?

As for a stranger, do I really need him alive? He took a gamble by coming to watch so it's not on my conscious if he dies.

I'd really have to know the odds of killing someone I liked but I suspect such a game would have them stacked higher than 17% so logically I'd have to take the risk.

Amongst the audience are my family, my friends and I assume innocent people, which means I could never take that chance to press the button if there are possibilities of them dying. I would rather die than live with that.

That means I would rather play with the odds of me dying.

I saw a cartoon about 50 years ago. A handful of people were in a room playing Russian Roulette. Each person took their turn and each was spared. The last guy was up. He put the gun to his head and was just about to pull the trigger and then, suddenly, pointed it at the others and pulled it. They all died.

My neighbor just took back a dog to the pound that her dog refused. She asked me to take it and due to the fact I have an elderly sick cat I cannot upset her balance. I talked her into keeping him the past few days and helped reaching out to find a home. One has not been found.
This was once my job, to train working dogs. A job put on hold at present. So it is gutting me. He is a great dog with a lot of potential. He was saved on his last day last week... and now put back in the system this morning. He just wonders what the hell is going on with his life. Why nobody will just love him.
So in a sense.. I have done this.
All I can think is wanting to spring him. But at what cost to my girl who just turned 19 on Halloween, hanging on for pure love of me..
I pressed the button on this lovely dog without choice. Life is brutal.
Can only hope he finds a loving home in time or I will probably drive there without thought and find a way.
