Do you support term limits for politicians?

Question

The congressman in my district was elected in 1980. Yet he keeps winning. Even people who hi challenge him in the primary can’t win. It is not OK for someone to spend almost their entire life in one office… it becomes self-service.

Ideally I don't support it. People should be allowed to vote for whoever they want.

But in practice, I might support it for some offices. After a while our representatives are not "one of us" like they should be. After a while they've spent so much time in the capital that they lose touch with where they came from. When they lose touch with where they came from, they are no longer from among us. They only represent us as an outsider.

Lifelong professional politicians were never intended. But there is still a big part of me that thinks people should be allowed to vote for anyone they want.

There's a delicate trade-off with having experienced leadership and preventing the corruption of lifelong politicians. I think term limits are absolutely necessary, but also shouldn't be so restrictive that we always have rookie politicians in office.

I think the higher priority to help prevent corruption is banning large "donations" to politicians and banning insider trading.

Yeap and support minimums. If what you do is not at least 51% supported, you get executed.  Gun bans? Execution  Abortion bans? Execution  Taking bribes? Execution  Etc.

I would prefer a whole another way of doing it so no idiot is wasting 4 years for another idiot to come along and change everything done and visa versa.
But for the sake of the question yes, as it's better than having one idiot all the time.

No, I don't support term limits. They are a simple minded "solution" to a perceived problem that usually isn't really a problem at all.

You said "Yet he keeps winning.". That's a clear indication the voters support him. Why force them to elect someone else?

Good candidates are few and far between, and when we have one in office that is effective and the people support, WHY REPLACE THEM? If they suck, they will be replaced by someone better. If they are effective, and there is no better candidate in the race, replacing them is just dumb.

Aside from that, term limits foster short term thinking. I don't want someone in office who knows they won't have to deal with the long term consequences of their decisions. That's a recipe for selfish decision making that benefits the politician and not his/her constituents.

The President is limited to 2 terms (8 years), and many state and local offices have term limits. Congress should be limited too. I would suggest 1 term for Senate (6 years) and 2 terms for House (4 years). That would cause new people with new ideas to be in Congress, have Congress better understand the average person, and reduce the stalemates we now have.

Absolutely not. It should be up to the people to decide who their representatives are. It is the peoples' job to elect the right representatives.

If they don't do the job it is THEIR fault.

What we need is a better education system so our kids get an actual education instead of a leftist indoctrination in school. Then they would be able to think rationally and make smarter decisions on election day.

Term limits exist to try and address one aspect of the fact that incumbency for most politicians is almost insurmountable advantage. But they only work so far as the politician in question is not able to transfer that advantage to a hand picked ally.

The real problem is the power of the office he is selling to get reeelction.

18 year max for every one but POTUS: SCOTUS gets 1 term of 18 Senate gets 3 terms of 6 House gets 9 terms of 3 Done. Problem solved. Enough time for institutional memory and not so much it's a career.
