Which polio vaccine? You realize that there have been more than one right? One was very unsafe and lead to many cases of cancer, one lead to the spread of the polio virus in certain populations increasing cases, and another one was more safe and relatively successful. If you can't answer that basic question about the beliefs of a third party associate of RFK Jr. then it's really a non issue because you don't even know what you are discussing. Not that some random person that just happens to know someone means anything from a policy position in the first place.

That basic question out of the way, humans are the only reservoir for polio virus so it's not going to make a reappearance either way. Wild poliovirus type 2, and type 3 have been eradicated from the world leaving only wild poliovirus type 1 left in small pockets of the world. Really the only place it is currently of concern is in Afghanistan and Pakistan and it is spread by consumption of fecal matter from infected individuals. This occurs generally due to bad hygiene/sanitation issues. So with modern hygiene and sewer systems it is of little concern for that reason alone. If you happen to travel to regions of the world where they still take shits in the street in the gutter, it's a little more risky for those who lack immunity.

That said in the USA the population has been vaccinated for multiple generations now. As a result, children that breast feed receive antibodies from their mothers in the breast milk for the first year to two years of their lives depending on how the child is raised and as a result have a boosted immune system to fight off polio if they were to come in contact with the virus. Being that the normal childhood vaccine schedule calls for the administration of polio vaccine at 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months it has little to any use if the child is breast fed because if the child is exposed in early life they will develop immunity with their mothers assistance. So the polio vaccine could potentially be skipped and the child still be safe, but revoking approval of the polio vaccine that has a relatively safe track record isn't necessary. Maybe removing the mandate that children in the USA take them would be fine with the option to take the vaccine if the parent chooses that for their child. That has generally been the stance of RFK Jr. on most vaccine issues. He seems to be anti government mandate, not anti-vaccine, but at the end of the day you are not even talking about him, you are talking about someone who just happens to know him who has an opinion that you really aren't even clear about? Which polio vaccine was it again? The left wing is caught up in a propaganda narrative that is very detached from reality.

If that wasn't enough I could go even further down the road into epidemiology and tell you that most children even in hot zones do not even become exposed to polio. In Pakistan I think the numbers are 13 per 100,000 children catch polio. Then I could tell you that most polio cases are asymptomatic to very mild and go unnoticed or at most present as minor illness with only 1-5% of infections leading to meningitis damaging the nervous system and having major complications that can paralyze or kill the patient. So while polio is a nasty virus, at this point it is not a major human health issue across most of the world, and especially so it is not a major health issue in the USA.

So unless Democrats plan to purposely start spreading polio from lab samples that are kept in storage to try to destroy the nation's children I wouldn't sweat it too much. Your kids should be fine.

Other sources have stated that the lawyer also has other clients, but also does law work for RFK Jr. also, not just his campaign. He did petition the FDA to revoke the approval of the Polio vaccine as well as other vaccines. His argument was that the trials did not include double blind trials. If the approval of the vaccines was rescinded, then new trial would have to be performed, and half of those receiving injections would not be getting the actual vaccine, and many of them would then get the diseases the vaccines would have protected them against. Those diseases would make a huge comeback.

Kennedy did not respond to written questions about whether he agrees with revoking approval of the Polio vaccine, or if, as health and human services secretary, he would intervene in an FDA review of the lawyer's petitions.

Even Mitch McConnell stated that efforts to undermine confidence in the vaccine are dangerous and suggested Kennedy should make it clear he doesn’t agree with Siri's (the lawyer) views if he wants to be confirmed as health secretary.

This person was a lawyer for RFK's campaign, and is not RFK's personal lawyer. Otherwise, this petition is unrelated to RFK. The headline is completely misleading because it makes it seem like this petition was on behalf of RFK. But the petition was on behalf of some other client of this law firm, unrelated to RFK.
This is about one particular polio vaccine (not all of them), which the FDA is alleged to have violated their own review and approval procedures for. The petition is asking for the FDA to withdraw its approval and conduct a scientifically valid trial that adheres to their own guidelines. In this case, it appears that the FDA's safety study only examined a 3 day period following injection. The FDA's own guidelines say that the review period should be much longer, especially for children where the FDA has said the review period needs to be multiple years since developmental disorders can take time to be diagnosed.
It also seems like the product is misleadingly labeled and marketed as a vaccine since it does not (according to the CDC) prevent some forms of infection and transmission, which makes it not a vaccine since it doesn't grant immunity (unless you use very recent claims that the definition is different).
The petition was from 2022, not recently. The lawyer has said on record that this petition was on behalf of a client. It's unrelated to RFK or Trump, both of whom are on the record saying they don't want to reduce access to vaccines.
This petition has nothing to do with autism and doesn't mention it.
The petition itself does nothing. It gives the FDA a chance to respond. If they did a proper study that adheres to guidelines from medical research, their own procedures, and guidance from the NIH and CDC, it should be easy to respond.

Salk's vaccine was the inactive virus, not the Sabin attenuated virus. Only the Sabin vaccine has a side effect of mutation into a virus similar to the live Polio virus. Reduced recently from 1 in 2.7million vaccine doses, but still a slight risk. The Sabin vaccine is the WHO Polio program vaccine of choice since sterile needles aren't needed. It is the oral version. Morning Joe needs more information in this story. This a hit piece on Kennedy.
