Don't recruit immigrants. The pay for engineers and programmers will increase. When it hits 250K then maybe we will see more graduates in those fields.

My father was an engineer and I worked in engineering myself. The pay for engineers has not kept up with inflation. When big tech says they need to recruit from overseas, what they really mean is they don't want to pay what it would take to hire locally.

Whatever happened to tech companies paying for employee's education as a benefit? The first engineering company I worked for did that. I went to a couple of years of college with them paying 60%.

There are other options for those companies other than importing.

I work as a software developer in high tech. Lots of startups, now at one of the FAANG companies. What I found after years of interviewing developers is that it's a skill similar to musical performance or playing chess. I have interviewed many candidates with degrees in computer science. About 75% of them were unable to write ten lines of working code. So Musk is right when he says there are more jobs for developers than there are Americans who want to do the work and are capable.

Programming is a bit like musical performance. You have to be talented and motivated. The demand for developers in the US exceeds the available talent. There are people who could program who are not, but the evidence of the past 50 years is that most people can't.

Everything you said is true, BUT, it's also true that there are lots of talented, experienced programmers (as well as other types of tech workers) who have left the industry because they had their jobs outsourced to foreign workers multiple times, and because wages haven't increased with inflation. They take their talents elsewhere, even if it means leaving tech behind.

The H1B program was INTENDED to allow a company to hire a few individuals, on a case-by-case basis, after they have exhausted efforts to hire an American. And I'm sure some companies do just that. But what's far more common is for a foreign outsourcing company to be brought in to replace whole departments with H1B workers. That shouldn't be legal, but the law was (intentionally) written with a loophole that allows it to happen IF the H1B workers aren't working for the primary company (they're working for a consultant company instead).

I was in IT for 15 years, with 3 jobs of about 5 years each, and 2 of those 3 jobs had the entire department outsourced to foreign consultants - people with lower skills replacing fully-staffed jobs, NOT filling jobs that couldn't be filled with Americans. Nearly anyone who has worked in tech for a decade will have gone through that at least once. And it kills the careers of people who are actually competent and experienced, and may eventually leave the field.

In interviewing, I also discovered that experience was a poor predictor of ability. It's not just new graduates who can't code. I've interviewed people with ten years experience who couldn't solve very simple problems. Yes, the H-1B system is a horror for the workers -- it's indentured servitude and should be completely reformed. Either let people come or don't.

I think Musk is generalizing when. he says this. I also think he has no idea what he's talking about-- because that depends on the population he's talking to. There are many of is who aren't bright, many who aren't motivated--and that goes for any country. Who is he to judge anyone?

Believe it or not, I’ve found that the television news I used to watch did not show much of what’s really happening here, regarding what Musk said, Executive order 31348 ( or there about, the order of the numbers I confuse) and how this may delay the inauguration, what was found recently regarding Iran and Russia, or the. motherships that have been seen by people. That last one may sound crazy, but something is happening up there and most of us aren’t aware of it. Of course you heard about the drones, but that was for maybe 3 or 4 minutes. And that was just the tip of the iceberg.
I am getting much news you don’t hear about here from BBC news, and believe or not, TikTok, which has reporters telling you breaking news before anything is heard about on regular television.
Something big is about to happen, is all I can say here. I’m no conspiracy theorist but I had never felt the election was right, and I’m not the only one. Something is about to hit the fan.

My experience with USA workers is ( generally ) only 2 weeks holiday , highly efficient , extremely productive , but have been ( previously anyhow ) very well paid , highly motivated , but yeah of course immigrants can do just as much vastly cheaper , thats the Western world in general.

In Australia , gigs like mine where I made a lot of money , just no longer exist , they can put in a stack of people for same money , I dont know how people are going to get though in the future.

He is right. Schools are failing our kids. For decades public schools have been lowering standards instead of making getting a high school diploma that means something. When the colleges get these kids they are no longer able to prepare incoming students with one or two remedial courses. Now the colleges must also lower standards.

We cannot compete on a global workplace.

The public schools have the highest per pupil expenditure of a y of the industrialized countries. The unions have grabbed most of the money. In my town many of the teachers make 100k a year for a 183 day school year

@exitseven The amount of money spent is a poor metric of quality. Most increased spending goes to administrators and not teachers at all levels including college, except sports coaches, who teach nothing of value.

Poorly educated students and teachers become administrators and college professors to make more money, and then provide poor education to high school and college students, who then go on to become poor teachers and professors and administrators. Rinse and repeat.

Republicans and their hatred of education are responsible for this problem.

@msc545 At the school where I work there are administrators for all these useless feelgood programs that the liberals want. There is even an administrator in charge of comfort dogs. They have comfort dogs that the students can pet it they are too tense from final exams (I swear I am not making this up).
The college also hired counselors for students and faculty that were overwhelmed by the results of the 2024 election. (I am not making this up either).
