Why do some believe bad circumstances reveal character instead of destroying it?

That’s like saying that not watering a flower reveals its natural state. If you’re constantly rude to someone or if anyone is constantly facing negative things, it doesn’t reveal who they really are or want to be.

Some people believe:

Power and authority as well as legality. For instance how many people would steal or murder or own a slave if it was legal for them to do so.

For instance a woman in my neighbourhood moved in to her disabled widowed mother's house with her husband and kids because they got her to sign away her power of attorney and sign over the house as well as her pension and father's pension. They then convinced her to move into a home while they renovated the home building and extension on the back and doing the garage up into a granny flat for her to move into, only for a little while and when it was all ready they'd move her back in. That was 10 years ago, they rented out the garage as a bnb and stopped paying the home. The other daughter and her husband had to take the mother in and look after her.

I believe that bad circumstances reveal character because it's once that person goes through hardships you can see what they're made of. How they handle hardships in life, obstacles, grief, anger, doubt, fear. You see how they go through it, how they handle it. Some will go face it straight on, look for solutions, go for help, ...

Others... just get angry, sit and cry, keep to themselves while not looking for a solution. I wouldn't say this "destroys". It can be self destructive sure, but it's still their character. Just bad traits. It reveals their character.

I'm a kind person, but I was a pushover. Hardships have made me more confident and mentally stronger to stay firm during moments of stress. How did this "destroy" me?

A friend of mine has been left for dead growing up and is a very sweet person, down to earth and VERY grateful for the smallest things. One of the few friends I treasure. She recovered and built herself back up.
