Here's a very detailed article about the issues. There was also a recent PBS program on the issue of wildfires I watched two days ago that was on air about 5 days ago.

Loads of misinformation about who was to blame. I thought the most salient comment I heard on NPR was from a former firefighter who saved his own home and several around him with his garden hose: "It wouldn't have mattered if there were 6,000 firefighters..." there weren't enough to fight the blazes.

Now, I agree that the mayor shouldve left wherever she was and headed back immediately. It was an emergency that canceled any ambassador-like previous engagement. She failed in that aspect.

Another salient fact: 57 % of the forests around LA are federal property!!! There are hosts of infrastructure projects that have not been enacted, true. But is the holdup ONLY due to Newsom?

What the PBS program said was that policies put in place after WWII to suppress natural fires in forests, lack of fire breaks in said forests were put in place to get as much wood as possible to build all the houses that needed to be built after the boys arrived back home to start families in all those subdivisions that grew up.

Forests were managed to provide wood and paper: they were commodities, not natural systems to be maintained as such. And, some of those subdivisions were built right next to forests instead of there being fire breaks to prevent damage to homes if there were forest fires.

Developers and home builders were primarily concerned with building homes and making money. They did not research or care about the issues of living next to a living system that regularly had natural forest fires.

So, the mayor and governor are not solely to blame. A line of Presidents, Secretaries of the Interior, mayors, governors, developers and home builders going back to 1945 are to blame. The unfortunate people suffering today have reaped 80 years of careless development, poor infrastructure, water managemenet, and land management.

PBS is the bottom of the barrel in the fake news cesspool. I would not believe anything they say. They probably admitt3d that Newsome cut 100 million dollars from the fire fighters budget. He was the one that signed the budget. He is responsible.

This is the same type of disaster as a hurricane. People are living too close to forests that have been mismanaged for nearly 100 years! Think of that. None of this is fake news.

It's true he cut this money. But do you know why it was cut? Because there was some other priority that trumped the firefighting budget. You also cannot suppress fires after years of drought. These forests were tinderboxes!

You're talking about a no-win situation. The other OTHER thing they were discussing that does seems to be foot-dragging is why the water projects that WERE budgeted were not being worked on. Again, this always seems to be about MONEY.

At the time these projects were funded, California was likely NOT in the middle of all these years of drought.

You cannot blame Louisiana's current land loss on our current governor. You can blame it on 100 years of oil barons cutting canals to get to oil, cypress tree cutters who cut down the trees for paper and wood for the same house building that was happening in California. Money going into state coffers whith NO THOUGHT FOR THE FUTURE and no thought for the environmental destruction.

None of this is fake. It's documented among scientists, farmers, fishers and citizens alike, who've had to abandon towns and homes to open water encroachment.

I'm a Master Naturalist and I volunteer with a host of agencies who are trying to curb land loss due to all this money/oil grubbing to maintain our fisheries, our greatest natural resource.

We study loads of environmental factors that have lead us to this point, which makes us vulnerable to Gulf hurricanes and additional land loss. California is suffering the same fate, unfortunately.

There is no ONE person to blame. .

@exitseven If inclusion and illegal aliens' initiatives are what the people told their legislators to vote for, then it's Californians who established these priorities, and the legislators and governor did what the people asked.

I'm sure experienced legislators suggested to their constituents OTHER priorities, such as all the rules and regs that would've helped SOMEWHAT in this situation. But this has never happened in the history of modern Los Angeles, and a giant amount of this issue has to do with global warming and d long-term drought, which has ALSO never occurred in the history of modern L. A.

This is usually the time where rains are falling, but they haven't been. And even IF money had been allocated to firefighters and firefighting, there was not enough water to put out all these blazes because they are unprecedented.

Cities do not have water supplies to fight FOREST FIRES. But the city has been built right up to forests because forests are lovely and pretty and everyone wants to live next to them, just like everyone wants to live next to the beach/ocean/shoreline.

This experience will mean an alteration in the footprint of L. A. and in the minds of the people who suffered these losses and with the legislators. Everyone is in shock. No one could've imagined this kind of devastation.

I live in hurricane alley. We face this all the time. It's a first for Los Angeles. They're talking about "hardening homes." I don't t hink that's going to work. Who can afford such structures? Few people have insurance because of the costs. Maybe rich folk will rebuild. I think many, many people will move to safer places.

Sue the builders and developers too. They didn't care where they put houses. It's a tragedy. But, like what happened with the Titanic, there will be loads of laws to prevent the same thing from occurring again.

Are you saying that instead of making sure there were tampons in the boy's lockerooms that they should have been making sure that the forests were looked after and that there was proper infrastructure to prepare for the fire that everyone knew was coming?
