He’s doing this to rib Justin Trudeau given he was an absolute catastrophe for Canada. That’s not an exaggeration given he’s is resigning and had an insanely low approval rating (and for good reason).
The USA does have serious foreign diplomacy issues with the Panama Canal and Greenland. China is trying to gain control in both areas which is a threat to us economically and militarily (especially the Panama Canal).
But I have to admit I wish Trump would stay focused on the above and quit bringing up jokes about making Canada the 51st state (although I do believe some Canadians would actually welcome that) and making the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America”.
Trump’s not serious about his remarks about Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. But I wish he dial it down on that. But he is 100% right about the Panama Canal.
Chinese companies control both sides of the Panama canal now. 40% of our shipping goes through that canal. If China wanted to they cut off shipping for US vessels that and would destroy our economy.
And on top of that American built that canal and American lives were lost doing it. Jimmy Carter was an absolute moron to hand control of that back to Panama (although admittedly he did have some successes in other policies). Either way the focus needs to be on that. Not on the “Gulf of America”.
But again Trump is the master “of the deal”. Like a professional salesman he knows how to throw out hooks and triggers to ultimately obtain something. Now he sometimes goes way over the top (and I wish he didn’t). But really what did he do foreign policy wise that was so catastrophic for the USA during his first term? We had relative world peace at the time.
Honestly I'm more in favor of taking Puerto Rico and DC first, then Louisiana will have a good time of not being last in everything for a while. We'd still be 50th place of course, but the ranking would be out of 52. Canada and Greenland would smoke us, so we'd be 52/52 which would be even more embarassing.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the US and they have tried voting whether or not they prefer statehood, or to remain as a territory. Most of my family there, along with their friends, think Trump is racist and only thinks about himself. The way he took care of, or rather, didn't take care of them during Hurricane Maria, is proof of that. It also shows he needs to be educated on what an island is. His PA economics university professor, Willam Kelly, wasn't kidding when he said Trump was "the stupidest goddam student I EVER had!" Incidentally I don't think it may make THAT big of a difference ion DC were to become a state--but they DON'T vote now, so that may be a plus because know the way he really is there. Neither does Puerto Rico--they vote only for their governor and sadly, they must deal with whomever the morons who elected Trump choose to vote for.

A culture is a local set of values adapted to a particular environment, not soo much a particular system of rules or goverment. As a culture would exist with or without the goverment as it is intrinsic to the local people and how they need to live in the area.
Broadly speaking the land of north America has naturally created around 9 distinct cultures.
Because of the way borders were drawn in North America by people who never saw the land in question. Those cultures like the land from which they are sustained is mostly split among the federations of North America.
With only Quebec and Dixie being entirely within one federation or the other.

Looking as the map and having traveled much of the continent it is true there are really 9 natural nations in North America.
This is a direct result of our continents geography and relatively short history.
One of those nations Quebec is entirely within Canada. That is a real distinct nation, The rest of Canada is split among 5 other distinct natural 'nations' which are shared with theses united States.
All of which are shared with America because the 49th parallel is not where anyone would draw the border in North America if you had actually seen the land.
Nonetheless Canadians could point to their dissociation with Quebec as a cultural core if they wanted. Just like Americans could do Likewise with Dixie if we were not soo obsessed with the idea of being first, and New England and Dixie didn't hate each other soo much.
More practically we should just do an exchange of States so that more of theses natural nations are on one side of the border or the other. Giving Canada the rest of New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Mass, RI, and connecticut), and America the rest of the Empty Quarter & and bread basket would bring a lot more harmony to both America and Canada.

1: Republicans are nationalist meaning they are favoring America first and would not be nice or fair to forign nationals including Canada, as democrats are.
2: Republicans don't campaign in Canada (or anywhere else) so all Canadians (like most forign nationals) know of Republicans is what the 80% democrat media tells them. They have seen no republican actually govern in a way favorable to them in a forign country so they have no way of knowing what media says is lies.
3: Canadians are in a parliamentary system which generally enables the largest minority to rule as a dictator, and thus create institutions which take much of the population's vote hostage.

Greenland is strategically too important to the defense of North America. Even the former NATO secretary general acknowledged that fact.
Denmark is incapable of defending the island, and the 50 thousand locals don't seem inclined even if they could. So we have been footing that bill for 100+ years now.
What probably really kicked this off is the locals are looking for independence and they are soo desperate for cash they were flirting with China and Russia.

The ones in the last 100 years on the other side of the world basically make no difference to American Security here in North America in truth. They were done mostly to protect American allies and 'interest'.
Greenland actually does matter to us here in North America. We have already invaded Greenland several times for that reason alone when we previous suspected Denmark would be unable to prevent enemeis from getting a foothold there.
The Island is now trying for independence, which means no protection at all.

Not that the "war" qualification really means anything as when your using the military on other countries you are engaged in a war of some kind.
Most of those invasion did not take place during a declared war.
Nor are we going to declare war on Greenland if we end up simple annexing the island.
Greenland does not have a military and Denmark's military is basely useless compared to ours which is already there in vastly superior numbers and power..
If we decided to annex the island we would simply tell both countries and have the military already there raise the flag.
The only reason to do that is really so that we can veto island access to hostile powers.
Anther solution short of annexation might be commonwealth association in which Greenland cedes their forign policy and veto power to us but remains nominally independent, maybe we give the islanders U. S. Citizenship.
That would be easy if they declare independence from Denmark first.

I don't know much about the people of the island so i can only infer based upon their current options as citizens of the EU, and how the most similar Alaskan escomoe culture lives. That most of the ones still on the island want to say there and enjoy that life style.
That option however would be available to the ones that change thier mind, as well as for visits. I know when I was in school i met a few escomoes who seemed to be largely down here to find wifes and education.
A girl i met talked about dating one and just going up there and ended up having a staring contest of some kind cause it was soo boring.
Yet they remain for whatever reason, it doesn't seem likely they would leave.

If you are in danger your odds of getting into NATO are poor.
Ukraine was in danger and needed something much more immediately than NATO just to get them to the finish line.
A mutual defense treaty with a nuclear power would have accomplished that goal and could have been negotiated in secrete, while they told Russia they were a loyal puppet.
Maybe Russia was intent on taking the land regardless, but if that was the case why now? Why not in the 2000s, or early 2010s?
If you can answer those question I grant you may know more about the the local situation in than I do.
My point isn't why Russia invaded but how you get other countries to defend you, and whether or not it is in their interest to do so.
I don't see defending the Ukraine in the interest of theses united States.
I can see Ukraine as a useful member of the military alliance when she is at peace, and I can see the value in defending members of that alliance including the Ukraine.
But given the Ukraine is not a member of that alliance, did not contribute to our defense it is not advantageous for us to defend her now.

DC technically can't be a state because of federal law. Puerto Rico is already a territory but doesn't have much financial utility to the US, from a practical standpoint.
Canada, on the other hand, would be immensely useful as a territory because it would give us a ton of natural resources. And because Trump has indicated that he has no interest in using military force, the only way Canada would become a territory is if they agreed to it through a negotiation.

It is in the constitution that the nations capitol not reside within a state. A constitutional amendment would be required.

@monorprise Ontario is two-fifths of the nation's population, and Quebec is our sole French-speaking province, so they (often unfairly) get the lion's share of political and economic power, but the Prairie provinces are our breadbasket, and we'd have a hard time should Western secession become a real possibility.

The largest and wealthiest actually have a lot less power America than they do Canada.
In Canada they merely have to buy off a few people at the top of a particular party. Then they control everything including Canada's state run media.
In America they have to buy off the different majority in both houses and the presidency, and still don't control the press if any of them speak out. The failure to do the same is no doubt why we know about soo much more corruption than canadains do.

Our Westminster (Parliamentary) allows a Prime Minister with a majority to become nearly an elected dictator, though none has tried to fully exert dictatorial power beyond ramming laws through the House of Commons.(Our Senate is appointed by the Prime Minister, not elected). Also, even a Prime Minister with a HUGE majority can conceivably be ousted if (don't know if it's ever happened) the Opposition parties AND some majority party backbenchers aligned to force a Vote Of No Confidence on a PM's bill (law), which would trigger an election..
@beefcakebradybatson Trump isn't allowed to do whatever he wants unlike a prime-minister who has near total command of his party. A president always has to negotiate with the senate, house, and court.
Even if his party controls all 3, that doesn't mean he controls them. The president isn't in a position to really pick who runs much-less wins in a party primary nor can he kick members out. Congressmen are elected separately by their states, and they don't answer to a president.
The president doesn't even control those elections so he has little in the way of taking such power in the first place.
American's don't have the kind of party discipline they have in parliamentary systems not just because we don't require it in our system but largely for this reason.
The fact that a prime-minister can be ousted a any time if he has a majority only matters if he fails to pick people loyal to him.
This is like the faithless elector problem in the USA. Its possible but it never mattered and if it did it would be the fault of the party that appointed the electors.
As such like in parlemtnary systems would be very unusual if it ever happens.
Votes in congress by contrast are rarely party line, almost all of them are bipartisan in opposition or support. Even if the president has a large majority such as Democrats did in 2010 with Obama that doesn't mean you get what you want.
Large numbers of democrats or republicans particularly from states that tend to go the other way consistently defect. Because their job is not to serve the party but their state. The party doesn't elect them, or even keep them off the ballot, their state does. Indeed even when parties really did try to get rid of a member they regularly frequently failed. Normal losing the seat all together although sometimes the member just win's anyway as an independent.
DC and PR have no economic or strategic value. They would only mean 4 more senators and a tranche of US Reps. All Democrats.
Canada has both economic and strategic value. As does Canal Zone and Greenland.

Trump has no intention of making Canada the 51st state. He makes that kind of statement as part of negotiations, in this case about trade with Canada and tariffs., like he always does.

I don't think it is a good idea. We would be inviting a large group of people who have no problem with the government "taking care" of them. We have enough of that mentality already.
Greenland is in between us and Russia. If Russia chooses to launch a preemptive strike, the first line of defense would be in Greenland.
Greenland is more important that than strategically. The island at the north Pole above north America is one of the best places to control satellites, and conduct modern space warfare.
it also happens to control the North Atlantic ocean and the Arctic ocean being in the middle of both.
He who controls greedland is in a position to domination the region, which is why America has long been interested and now Russia and China.
