Okay so, Canada is one of the most Liberal places and that would cost Republicans big time in the future if it were the 51st State.

I stand by the notion (as an American) that Canada should remain independent and control its own trade, own healthcare system, and its own sovereignty. Canadians are awesome and cool, though wouldn’t want them to suffer from our bumblings & screw ups. There must be a corporate reason Donald Trump wants this - People ‘vacationing’ across the border for cheaper pharmaceuticals, cheaper hospital care, and treatments that are simply unavailable in the US would be stopped if under America’s rulership which would put millions of Canadians at risk.

I'm Canadian and my views lean right and I guarantee Republicans don't want to see Canada as a 51st state. My country leans very left. I like Americans but I didn't want to be one. Anyone on the right may think that I would prefer to join a country that leans right but I'm very grateful that Canada provided my grandparents refuge when they needed it and I want my side to be able to convey their opinion without being insulting. So when you get a counteroffer, it's close to what you really want and you agree. Then the person negotiating thinks they won, but you got exactly what you wanted.

Moreover this might put you in a worse position militarily if Trump decides to take Greenland by force.
Canadians might provide allies with intelligence and forbid USA use of their air space and territorial waters or even not wait patiently for their turn and instead join the war on the allied side.

Maybe secure your shorter border in the south before you consider securing the northern one against commando raids and deal with narco subs as a exercise before facing ones with actual torpedoes and naval mines?
