Why does it seem like everyone who works in parking services is miserable?

Basically parking attendants and “meter maids”. They all seem so miserable. I was buying a parking pass and accidentally bought the wrong one and I called to let them know and this lady had the biggest attitude… for absolutely no reason. My mom said I should’ve told her “I hope you have a better day than your attitude”

I started getting the same attitude when I worked for a corrupt water board. The ladies in billing were behind bullet proof glass they got so much hate and discontent. It isn't just from the costumer facing side either, usually your management that gets to the top in those settings are the ones who thrive in that kind of environment, so you're getting it from the front and back at the same time.

Personally I don't see the point at all in a lot of those "services". Aren't your tax dollars paying for the roads already? Aren't the water boards begging the feds and state governments along with local millages to operate every year? What exactly is your direct money funding?

A few years ago, I was parked at a parking meter. I was in the car, on a busy road during rush hour, engine running, waiting for traffic to pass to pull out when the meter expired. Out of nowhere, a meter maid appeared and stuck a parking ticket on my windshield.

The ones I hate are the type who race over to you as your squeezing into a parking space so they can record exactly what time you arrived. You can guarantee they'll be back the second your ticket expires to see of you're still there.

What really grinds my gears is over complicated parking meters you need a degree in computers to operate. They really confuse old people who haven't a clue which hole to put their money in. I refuse point blank to use any carpark that requires you to download an app too.

Ah , I totally agree. Seems that where I am they are adopting an app but at least they “seem” to be mostly aligned on which, this at is at least is half thought out. Perhaps the intention is also to confuse they older and the less technology experienced / minded

Because your situation happens all the time and it's probably very frustrating work. Also customers are not nice to folks like this typically. Not saying you weren't but any job that deals with the general public that requires it's customers to do part of the work, in your case pick the right ticket and follow directions, is going to result in the employee fixing issues all day long. That isn't their fault but it is a job and it's not fun work.

Can you relate to this at all within your job? I try to do that and it helps me recognize why people seem like that at their job. It's possible it's the best job they could find for now and I'm sure it's not a highly compensated job.

Hey that's you and if it's working for you to just quit then you be you. I don't want to imply you mean just quit and worry about finding work another day or if you mean interview and get hired for a new job first and then quit the one you don't like.

Unfortunately for many that isn't easy it isn't an option if they have the responsibility of bills or kids. Also, remember not everyone has to be happy at their job. It's not a parking services responsibility to look happy. They're not in customer service. Their job is to enforce the rules and hand out tickets when necessary.

People are awful to them so what do you expect? They can quit yes, and I'm sure they do, but someone else comes in and it's the same thing. Someone has to do these jobs and no one should care or expect what they look like doing a job like that. If you make someone else's job more difficult, because you made a mistake, honest mistake or not, why are you surprised? It happens to them all day long because people don't pay attention. I am not trying to make this your fault because I do understand that people could be nicer to each other but times are not easy for many people financially. This may be the best job this person could get for now and it's miserable work. That said we all don't have the luxury or just quitting that easily. I say easily because your reply said once I start to become miserable you quit.

Most work (not all) will bring some kind of misery eventually especially the higher paying the job. If you meant what you said literally about quitting you might run into problems as you get older. Maybe not but you could have more empathy maybe for people in these annoying jobs that no matter what need to be filled by someone.

As I'm re reading your question I might have misinterpreted you. Do you mean people that work behind a parking garage? The ones you pay after leaving? I have to contend with paid parking on the street and people come around to hand out tickets if time is up. If we're talking two different things, I apologize then my last reply is off basis.

Are they? We don't have paid parking where I live, so I've never had this problem. But they probably have poor working conditions and have to deal with a lot of assholes. After working 4 years in customer service, I started getting bitchy with people too. I'm not surprised that customer service people are so rude and grumpy when they have to constantly deal with idiots and entitled assholes and no one has their back.
