The stuff you are hearing about is something different. It's about government programs that give incentives to companies to hire people from certain groups (It's a long list of groups). Canceling those programs does NOT make discrimination legal. It is still very illegal.

By the way, the kind of programs being targeted are sometimes called reverse discrimination. For example not hiring someone because of their race is discrimination. The opposite of that is intentionally hiring them because of their race. That's called reverse discrimination. Canceling those programs would remove reverse discrimination.

To be fair, it was rather disingenuous to begin with, and largely a legalised scam. Companies were taking government money under the guise of "diversity training" or "accommodation" and billing the taxpayer for them giving a person a job.

However, we will find more disabled and former military being booted from jobs, as most were taken on under these schemes.

So it will likely backfire on Trump in round 2 of the fallout.

Generally it's not. The laws of the US are a patchwork of federal laws and state laws. Federal law against employment discrimination covers companies engaged in interstate commerce. Many states also have laws prohibiting employment discrimination that covers employers with more than a small number of employees. It depends on what you mean by "et cetera".
